Network Media HD Server

Hey there folks. I need some advice on my home media network setup and I was told this was the place to go for the best info.

At the moment, if I download a movie, I download it to my laptop hard disk, copy it to a USB stick and plug that into the USB port on my TV and watch it from there.

While not ideal, the system works. Preferably, I would like to have a unit connected to the HDMI port on my TV. I would also like my external hard disk connected to that unit but also be available on my home network. The result being that as I am downloading movies/music, they are going straight to my network drive, and I can simply switch over to my HDMI input on the TV and its there ready to watch.

If it helps, I am using a MacBook with an Airport Extreme and my Hard Disk is Mac formatted. I assume that limits my options!

I was told about such things as the ROKU but with that I wouldn't be able to copy TO the disk from my laptop over the network.

    Maybe a Raspberry Pi??

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated
    Darren

I`d suggest you try downloading Plex or XBMC on your mac and connect your hard drive directly to it, just to get you introduced to media servers. Then you can look into further options for what you need with a bit more knowledge:-)
