Some of you may have seen a 280eur voucher being sold yesterday here, well I PM'd the guy and got it for 150eur which I'm happy enough with, providing there's still money on it and I wasn't scammed :D

Anyway, I don't actually play any instrument proper proper, the guitar a little bit. Was thinking it'd be nice to get something else and the first two that come to mind are a Violin/Viola or Accordion.

Would I get something decent enough with 300eur though? This would be just to have to mess around on and possibly some day get lessons, but I'd like it decent enough so that anyone who does actually play it, will be able to take to it and it won't be such bad quality they'll refuse to play :D

Any feedback or links to products on the waltons site appreciated :)

Not sure if your voucher covers lessons, but that might be worth checking out.

IMO it is better to be able to play one instrument to a reasonably good standard, than it is to just tinker around on lots of instruments.

Anyway, just food for thought. ;)

Very good suggestion, I'm just not sure I'm in the right place at the mo to start lessons, but would eventually hope to take something up. At 29 it might be a bit late, hopefully not, I can't even read music and don't have a clue what all this clef and tuning differences between viola and violin are etc :(

rigsby suggestion excellent, but please don't buy an accordian, you are only encouraging the manufacturers to keep going........

    :P

Not sure what you mean by "in the right place"....location, or mind set ? If it is the latter, then you are never going to, unless you want to be. Twenty nine is not too old. I started bass guitar lessons nine years ago.....aged fifty !!!:D I now play in a band. So the "too old to learn" excuse does not hold up. You are never too old to learn anything. Where there's a will, there's a way.

As far as reading music is concerned, you dont necessarily need to read to enjoy playing an instrument. It all depends on your goals. You say you play guitar a little. Why not build on this basic knowledge with some lessons ? If you just wish to play for the sheer enjoyment of it, and to entertain friends at home or in the pub etc., then you dont need to read. If you want to make a living from music, then reading would be an asset. If you have a love for music, then paying for music lessons is a good investment IMO.

    Again.....just food for thought.

Oh come on! You have to love this:
    :)

Thanks for the suggestion again Rigsby, yes, it's more I have a love for music and I believe if I could play something I could create some good music. I've spent years listening to music of all genres etc and would hope to learn at some stage, but while I have the voucher now I think I'd just like to get an instrument in the spur of the moment. I'd love a Kora actually too :D

Nope ! I'm afraid that the accordion is one of my least favourite instruments.

However, music is music, everyone is different, and each person has their own favourite type of both instrument and music.

Best of luck with it. :)

nice try but no, just no!

Maybe a keyboard might be more for you?

i can't play keys but i have learned a few chord shapes and can have fun with one!

you would probably get some kind of basic workstation for that money or a little more........

whatever you decide remember you may be paid to play most instruments but some you are paid to stop playing ( accordian, bagpipes) ;-)

Screw you both :D I've a piano already actually (I do removals and picked one up for free, a decent one and all :D) so would be more into something a bit different. Might go with a violin, the accordions look a bit more pricey and you'd probably need to spend a fair bit to get a daycent one.

Cormie ever heard that the accordian player gets the girls?

no Cormie , you have not.

    Waltons.....' Hmmmmm....

I humbly suggest you spend the voucher on a lifetime supply of picks. They'll work.

What about something like a midi-keyboard or an AKAI MPC, and do some electronica dj stuff? It's a fun way to mess around with instruments and there's no real lessons or structure, you just pick stuff up as you go.

Wow, not much support for waltons or accordions here :pac:

I think I might just go with a violin, or viola, I guess violin? Any violinists here who'd be able to suggest one?

Accordions look like I'll need to save up for another while yet, want to spend the voucher asap while I can still trace the seller if all goes bad at the till with the voucher ;)

The definition of a Gentleman = Someone who knows how to play the accordion but doesn't :p

When did accordions get such a bad rep??

I would not worry too much about it. If it is your instrument of choice, then go for it. :)

Well it's between that, a violin and a kora but I don't think I'll get the accordion or Kora for that kind of money, maybe a starter violin but I still don't have a clue what to look for.

Thinking about taking up either the accordion or the violin? You must hate your neighbours! :p

Hehe, violin can sound pretty horrible if you don't know what you're doing, I've tried before, sorry in advance to my neighbours so :D

Think I'll go pick one up today!
