Hey, just in case anybody knows or can help: What company provides all the motorcheck websites with all the data about cars? Is it supplied by Irish Government? Any information on this? I tried but couldn't find anything on that.

    Thanks.

As far as I know they get some info off banks regarding finance and national data base for stolen or that.

What about mileage/clocked stuff? previous damage? I assumed there is one single database which is owned by say some company or government, and each of the websites is charged money for a specific query to run hence the users pay the charge for query + 10% (or so) on top to website owners?

To the best of my knowledge there is no mileage register in this country.

How come some of those car check sites say that the car has been clocked and stuff like that? is that all just made up?

Mostly imports as the process is much tighter in the UK.

Nice one, will sign up for it.

Does that mean that all these motorcheck.ie just charge you just to provide you with free info?

Alright after some reading up, I realized that's not it.
I checked a site called mywheels and in FAQ there is a question saying:
Where is your data sourced from?
Answer was: "All data is sourced from official sources in Ireland and the UK including government, trade bodies, insurers and manufacturers."

which means there is some authority who holds all this data.

They are pushing for sharing of mileage by the nct but that hasn't happened.
Write offs will most likely come from insurance companies.
Tax expiry probably from official sources such as local authorities.
To be fair you could possibly find out most of the info that they provide. Over the sake of a few euro, I'd rather pay it than trawl through the Internet trying to find it for free.

This old chestnut comes up all too regularly.

The NCT are the body in this state that have a mileage database for cars that have been through the NCT.

No private car data-check companies have access to this information due to the Data Protection Act - even if they cleverly give the impression that they do.

How hard would it be for the DoE and Revenue to put their heads together with the insurance companies to create a user-friendly database where consumers could access relatively accurate information (for a small fee of course!) on odometer readings recorded at each NCT in the vehicle's history, periods declared off the road, basic insurance information on whether it was ever crashed,stolen/recovered etc.

Of course they'd have to find a work-around of the Data Protection Act - but this is Ireland, and anything is possible!
