This is a first, at a time they are dropping sports like flies, they've picked up the rights to the Winter Olympics for the first time (presumably, they got the rights for a song thrown in with the 2016 Summer Games). The interesting thing though is that they are airing their coverage on News Now, which I thought they were more or less not allowed air original programming on.

Might open up the possiblity of News Now being used for sporting clashes in the future?

Probably still have all the usual graphics around the bottom and sides on News Now - a joke if this is the case.

I asked them before about showing their web only GAA coverage on the News Now channel and got some rubbish about not having the rights to do so.

I think that was the proposed RTÉ Plus channel they were referring to.

This is what the BAI said about the planned news channel
... the BAI considers the proposed channel could make for a stronger service if it contained more original content, including live programming. To this end the BAI considers that, subject to funding constraints, RTÉ could be requested to commit to more investment over time for new content on these channels.

    and from the Ministerial Decision
The Minister considers that the public value of this channel could be further enhanced were RTÉ to take on board the proposals raised in the consultation process including:

This from the RTÉ press release
    ...

RTÉ has successfully secured exclusive live free-to-air television broadcast rights for Rio 2016. In addition, RTÉ Sport has also secured broadcast rights for television highlights coverage, radio coverage comprising both live and highlights broadcasts, and comprehensive digital coverage with live, highlights, simulcast and catch-up packages across online and mobile platforms for Rio 2016.

The broadcast rights were awarded to RTÉ by SPORTFIVE International, the sports marketing agency which acquired the broadcast and exhibition rights to Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 in 40 European territories from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is now sublicensing them.
    ...

As part of the agreement, RTÉ has also made a commitment to broadcast coverage of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on RTÉ News Now, with the news channel featuring live coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies as well as a daily highlights programme.
