    Hey all,

I realise it is a bit early to be worrying about these things, but I'm curious: are the post grad carrels referred to here the desks in various states of disrepair around the edges of the Lecky and the two person desks in the Berkeley? Are they worth the hassle of potentially being allocated one in a designated 'bants' section of the library, being occupied by innocent undergrads etc? They don't seem terribly appealing for those reasons but I've heard complaints that the reading room tends to be hectic...

    GRMA! :)

The carrels are indeed the desks around the edges of the Lecky and Berkeley. I agree that they don't look terribly appealing, but they do come with a locked drawer/cabinet, and you can request to have books assigned to your carrel (rather than taking them out on loan). I didn't bother applying for one personally as I'm a part-time student, but if I was full-time I probably would.

The reading room is very hectic these days, but partly I think the restricted summer opening hours of the libraries are to blame for this. During term time I never found the reading room too crowded, and it tends to be quieter at the weekends, too.

There are also some on the top floor of the Ussher! They are kind of small but at least the Ussher is the nicest library to study in, imho.

Ah I wondered what the craic was with the top floor of the Ussher. Cool! It's practically a luxury library compared to the other two! :)

Thanks for the tips, both of you :D

It is only 20 euro. My desk is in the berkeley and is useless. Only 1 in 4 desks has a plug and for a laptop. The locker is the most used thing as I can put a lot into it. I tend to use the reading room more though. A lot easier to work in in ways.
