    I have a Volvo S40 2008.
"anti skid service required" appears on dash and then engine cuts out.

Any one have any ideas on this? My mechanic is stumped. Nothing coming up when plugged into computer. Runs fine for a few weeks and then this happens again.

If I take out the key and leave for a couple of mins it will start again. But not great when it happens in the middle of the lights!!

I believe that message tends to mean that there is an issue with the ABS/Traction Control unit, pretty common fault in that generation S40, although the engine cutting out is an unusual symptom for that warning

Fixed the problem in my V50 by replacing the ECU.

(ANTI SKID SERVICE REQUIRED, BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY, IMMOBILISER SEE MANUAL, SRS AIRBAG SERVICE REQUIRED) - These popped up from time to time.

Anti-skid warning message is related to the ABS/Traction Control unit, could at best be a sensor or worst the entire module. Good news is that the module can be reconditioned for a fraction of the cost of a new one from a Volvo dealer.

Car cutting out shouldn't be related to the above, you really need the car scanned by a diagnostics computer to point you in the right direction of these problems.

It's not cutting out, the engine is still on, but the electronically operated throttle stops responding. You can still crawl by using your clutch, but I think it will seriously damage it.

Thanks guys. Was thinking the error message was related to the module alright.
But the engine IS cutting out. The error appears and then the engine cuts out, as if I have pulled the key out. Does this unit have any control over the engine? To me it seems like the Computer tells the engine to stop. To me it doesn't feel like an engine problem but a computer problem.
    Any pointers?

    Thanks

This may not be the esp unit causing the trouble it could be a communication issue in the can network. You will need someone with decent diagnostic equipment and experience to get to the root of the issue. Normally if the esp unit itself has a fault the engine wouldn't be affected unless it is it that is causing the comm issue.

Did get a garage to run diagnostic and it was saying ABS sensor alright. The "anti skid service required" is not there constantly. It appears and then the engine stops, pull the key out wait a few mins and then it might be grand again for another week. No warning lights on dash until it happens again.
I am just wondering, why are there no dash lights constantly and why is this cutting out the engine?

I would be surprised if there is only one fault code on the diagnostics with the issues you are experiencing. If it was the common pressure sensor issue it would normally not come and go and also wouldn't cause a cut in power
