How long to stay in Munich?

I'm planning on going to Munich in early December and I'm wondering how long people who have been there would recommend to stay?

I'd be flying out of Cork early on the Saturday and returning on a flight around 11.30am on the Wednesday. That gives around 3 and a half days. Is that enough? The other alternative is to stay for 1 week but that seems too long. I also plan on doing a day trip to Salzburg or somewhere while there. I've looked into flying into Dublin from Vienna but it seems like a long journey from Salzburg to Vienna and I don't think it would work out.

    I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks.

I was in Munich last May, spent 2 full days there and it definitely wasn't long enough. What makes Munich a great city is that it has the history, the culture, the sport and the beer so your trip can be as jammed packed or chilled out as you want. I loved my time there its now one of my favorite cities.

I think 3.5 days is a perfect amount of time. Enjoy!

Can you book a flight into Munich and return from another city?

I'd give Munich at least 3 nights if you have a week to spare. There's a lot to see and do in the city itself and a local day trip is also worth considering.

Then take a day to head for for Prague, Milan or Vienna / Bratislava by train for a another few days and fly home from there.

If you're interested in science and technology, the Deutsches Museum could take up to two days to do properly.....

Great museum, but then the Germans do museums so very well.

Personally i'd also allow a day to be completely lost to a hangover.

Thanks a million for the advice.

I had looked into flying out of Vienna but will check out the other cities mentioned for a flight home.

Has anyone done day trips from Munich? I'm particularly interested in going to Salzburg but would love to here if there are any other ones you would recommend? Would it be manageable time wise on our own getting a train or would a tour be better?

I had read about the Deutsches Museum. Will definitely check it out.

    Hi op,

I spent 4 days in Munich in February, 2012, I arrived Monday evening and flew home Friday evening.

I'd definitely recommend the Deutsches museum. I really enjoyed the Olympiapark (the Olympics were held in Munich in 1972), there's a lot to see and do there. I also visited Dachau concentration camp. Dachau is about 15km north of Munich and can easily be reached by S-bahn from Munich city centre.

We were in Salzburg last Sunday on a round trip from Munich. However, that was part of a long (1300km) driving trip; we didn't go direct between the two cities. Apparently the train takes only 2 hours and there would be no time wasted searching for car parks, etc., so I guess it could easily be done as a day trip.

There's a gorgeous little toy museum in Munich if you're into that. Very central and shouldn't take more than an hour at the most.

A week or longer is easily filled with stuff to do with the variety of museums and sights in the city along with literally dozens of day trips possible from Munich.

Should you want to fly from somewhere else then Salzburg and memmingen are the nearest 2 airports, with Zurich and Frankfurt being slightly further away.
All flights are to Dublin but there's flights to Kerry from Frankfurt Hahn which may suit folks from cork.
The Christmas market in Frankfurt Is worth a spin and hotels at the weekend there are for buttons as this such a business city that they have oversupply at the weekend when the bankers have fecked off back to London or wherever.

You can fly direct to Munich from Cork with Aer Lingus twice weekly.
