Youtube Access in Schools

    Hi everyone,
I'm just curious as to the level of youtube accessibility in schools. My school have it blocked for students which I find restrictive (music teacher) and teachertube just hasn't anything i need. There's lots of great stuff on it and unfortunately the NCTE don't allow youtube for schools, its either all or nothing.

Have many schools got youtube open for students and what do you think of it?

We have it. It's a nightmare when you have LCA for IT classes. I've alerted our management to it, but nothing happened.

Yeah we have it. You really need the monitoring software on the teacher computer though more than ever

I had access to youtube in my last school but the broadband was so crap I could never use it. I used to download any videos at home and play them in class off my laptop.

This worked perfectly for me for years. Cannot understand who in our place is pushing for it to be available on every computer, every class - plus the smartphones in the pockets for those who have managed to get and pass on the 'secret' wireless password.

My school are rolling out ipads. I really want the students to have access to it even just the school version, so that they can learn to search and listen to versions of music pieces themselves. Teachertube and the like simply don't have the volume of useful music pieces that are available on youtube.

Simple Example: Currently the study of a score is centralised at the top of the room where I play the music and all students must follow their scores at the same pace. Instead I can give my students their scores and get them to work in pairs/groups/individually listening and watching an orchestra perform the piece while marking on their score the instruments they hear.

Yes I can do this illegally by downloading the videos from youtube and re-uploading them in some way for students to watch but I also feel that teaching them to have a discerning eye/ear in using the search is really important for musicians.

The school I was in last year was part of the broadband upgrade programme. We were supposed to get 100mb. After the "upgrade" it still didn't work.

Not true. About 5 years ago NCTE introduced various levels of access. Schools at the time were defaulted to the most restrictive level but you could opt to change.

We have youtube access on teacher computers but not on student computers. It's such an improvement. Would hate to go back to downloading at home.

I was with my vice principal when he rang and they said it was all or nothing with YouTube?

I don't know how it's done but they have been able to change access at individual pc level. Our classroom computers are on the student network, not the staff network the offices are on, but it has been possible to give those pcs access but not give access to student pcs in computer rooms.

I think it might involve more than just NCTE though - it was done by the VEC IT coordinator and he had to go around to each individual pc to give access.

Sorry I should have been clearer, the teachers wireless network has access but the students doesn't.

YouTube for schools would allow the students access to approved youtube material and teachers would be able to unlock specific videos

We have access, and it is a great resource to have. I note in my textbook the clips worth using and they are there then each year without having to search again

Yeah we just have it on the teachers' computers at the top of each room, but no student computer has access. It's great, find it so handy.

When I said network I meant the network that determines what common storage drives each pc has access to. We have a student network and a staff network.

The teacher pc in a classroom is on the same internet network, whether wireless or not, as any student pcs in a room too. But the teacher pc can have youtube access while it's blocked on the student pcs.
