Sky Movies and The Dark Knight???

Just wondering if anyone can answer this as I am curious and don't know much about movie rights/laws etc.

I've noticed Sky Movies showing Batman Begins regularly enough but have never seen them show it's sequel The Dark Knight.

Today, the third in the trilogy The Dark Knight Rises is premiering on Sky Movies and they have both it, and Batman Begins available on Anytime but yet again, no sign of No. 2 in the trilogy.

Does anyone know what the reason may be?

Sky purchase what you call 'First Run' Pay TV licences/rights from the Studios, which allows them to be the first to exclusively show movies on TV before anyone else, a short period after the films have been released on DVD (usually no more than a year). I think the rights they have at the moment, they have exclusivity over movies for about 15 months. After that, the non-pay TV rights become available. I know ITV usually buy the rights to show Warner Bros films (studio behind The Dark Knight) in the UK, so my guess is that they currently hold exclusivity on it. Older films, such as Batman Begins, can still be licenced to multiple providers/channels which is why you can watch Batman Begins on Sky Movies and ITV. Sky pay through the roof for all these rights (~£300m per year term I believe), annoyingly, and so the likes of Virgin/UPC can't compete and try to nab the rights from them.

Apologies for the long explanation. I find the whole area fascinating (especially with the emergence of Netflix). TL;DR ITV more than likely have the exclusive rights, preventing Sky from showing it.

Just a quick note, Google tells me that The Dark Knight has yet to premiere in the UK, as of March this year which is quite odd. A huge film like it, they don't really beat around the bush showing it. But they may be waiting for the new TV season to show it, and stick it in with a few preview ads.

The Dark Knight Rises premiers this week on Sky Movies so maybe they are just pushing the franchise?

Yes, I remember when they screened it alright. Absolute madness by RTE. I assumed at the time it was a re-run, surely it was RTE 1 Mid-Week movie worthy?? But I'm pretty sure it was the initial screening on Irish television though.
