Sorry if this is the wrong place, or has been asked before.
i keep getting phone calls from either indian or american sounding guys saying im downloading infected files. I listen to there speech and then tell them i have no pc and what sort of files are they, by this time they either hang up or insist someone is. I know it has to be a con as all they know is the surname. Question is where do they get the number from and what is the con. And is there any way to stop it

The con is they talk you through downloading their software to "fix" your PC. It then takes over you PC and holds you to ransom, and for a small nominal fee the remove the backdoor, probably slurping off all your personal details, credit card number and email addresses in the process. Probably getting your name and number from the eircom online phone book, or is your number available else where online?

To solve it, consider going x-directory? For a low tech solution buy a referees whistle and blow into the phone everytime they ring? They'll soon stop.
