Canon 1v or Nikon F100

    Hello All,

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have been playing with Manual Focus cameras recently both 35mm and Medium. I am enjoying going back to film incredibly.

However I would like to have an autofocus 35mm slr to take advantage of full frame photography which is just out of my budget on the digital front.

Ive been glancing at the second hand F100, F5 & Canon 1v.

    Any thoughts on these cameras?

I have a nikon DSLR but DX lenses so Im not really married to Nikon for lenses.

    Looking forward to your opinions.

    Best Wishes

    VC

When I got my F100 years ago I wanted an F5. I couldn't afford an f5 at the time though.
so I went with the F100. On paper it was 90-95% the camera the F5 was but only 1/3 of the price so it made perfect sense to go for the F100. It's probably one of the nicest cameras I have ever held in my hand and used.
As far as I can remember all it lacks over the F5 is a slightly smaller viewfinder, doesn't have the viewfinder curtain for long exposure shots (which doesn't make much difference anyway) and less FPS on hi speed shooting.

The F100 on the other hand has the option of having the battery grip if you want it for a vertical shutter button.

I've never used the 1v so I can't comment on it in particular. One thing to note with Nikons of the F5/F100 era is that the rubber gripping around them can be prone to coming off/peeling. If that doesn't bother you about the Nikons it isn't a real problem.

Thanks Pete. Great to get some feedback from an owner. I am a bit nervous about buying second hand but will do my due diligence on that.

I have been leaning towards the f100 because of cost. Most places are selling body only. Which would be your lens of choice? 50mm prime?

I recently, in the last 2 months bought an F90X (different to the F90). It is the preceding camera to the F100. I got it for AU$80 body only. Again its about 95% the camera the F100 is, FPS is almost the same, AF is probably a little slower and its a bit less ergonomic than the F100. As for lenses, I've got everything I need from my digital kit but I've got a cheap 50mm 1.8 on it for simplicity. It keeps the camera/lens small and useable, good in low light when you can't just bump you ISO up like with digital.

It's funny with cost...it almost seems as if 5-6 years ago the likes of the F100 dropped massively and has plateau'd because of their long term worth as a camera.

I think the last images I shot with my F100 were on some colour infra rad slide film (that I wasn't aware had been discontinued!!!) using a Sigma 15-30mm lens when I was back in Ireland about 4 years ago. I'd never ever sell my F100. Ever.

Brilliant. Thanks Peter. I think I'm sold ;)

Could you imagine going back to film from digital?

I mostly shoot film now as it is. I went digital back in 2006/2007 but the past 3 years I've gone back to film 80% of the time. It's just more enjoyable for me.

I have an Eos 1V and I love it. Bought it a few years back to replace an original Eos 1. Really great camera and I can't fault it at all. I originally bought it second hand as an Eos 1 V-HS but the extra grip was too bulky and heavy so I bought the standard grip. I wanted a new Canon 35mm as I know they had stopped making them and I wanted a late model that would last for a long time.

I've never used the canon, but I've used an F5 and the F100. I've owned an F100 for quite a while, probably one of the best modern 35mm cameras out there. The F5 is superior in a couple of respects, but it's also heavy and big big big, the F100 is pretty light and relatively compact. Though in fairness for day to day shooting I'm inclined more toward my FE-2 in that regard anyway...

If you already have a Nikon probably best to stick to Nikon. The 1V is pretty much the same as my 6D and that's one of the reasons I love it. I can switch between digital and film with minimum of change. It's all the same lenses I use too.

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Im leaning more towards the Nikon F100 although the Canon does look the part too. I am scouting ebay as I type. If anyone has an old F100 lying around and wants to off load it feel free to drop me a PM :):o

Just picked up a F100 in Conns for €120. Includes the battery grip which is quite handy.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Good price :) You're far better getting it in the likes of Conns as well, assuming they still offer that 6 month warranty on 2nd hand bodies. Win win.

Thanks Daire, yes I got the warranty too which is grand. It came with a battery grip too. Although I think I wont use it to keep the size and weight down. All it needs is a wipe down and its good as new. Quite pleased with the fact it takes AA batteries.

Mysteriously there is a half shot roll in it... what could be on it? :) probably pics of Conns shelves :)

Just picked up a 50mm 1.8g in Gunn's. Really looking forward to shooting with this :)

I would have gotten the older non-G AFD lens myself, but the G lens will work fine. I have a penchant for aperture rings.

That was my thought initially. But been able to use it on my D3200 too was the ultimate reason for choosing it above the D. Very curious to see 50mm on full frame.

it's a short telephoto on a full frame.
i'd love something slightly wider than 50mm, but unfortunately the best option for me (OM zuiko 40mm f2) ain't cheap, if you can find one.

    28mm 1.8 looks good too :)
