Dublin - Limerick, what's the story with stations there?

Hey guys, so I've never been to Limerick and I got a friday off work, so decided to go there as I got many friends living there, decided to go for a visit. Since none of my friends drive they have no idea what petrol prices/stations are.

My car is 2001, bmw, E46 - 318i - 1.9 - 118bhp. I have topaz fuel card but I am not sure if it will come in useful. So my questions are:

    1) Any suggested route for least traffic/shortest? (I dont' mind Tolls)
    2) On calm driving (Shifting between 2500-3000, no harsh braking) how much average fuel is needed to get to Limerick? (I know there are fuel calculators but I don't trust them)
    3) Is there much topaz stations in limerick and on the way there?
    4) Would I be better off fill up in Dublin and go or fill up as I need to?

    Thanks :)

Limerick is straight down the M7. You can't miss it.

Theres 8 or 9 topazs in the city and suburbs. think petrol is a little more expensive than Dublin.

€70 should do you for the round trip. Just fill it up before you leave home.

M7 all the way, fill up before you leave. You should make it there and back on one tank. And yes there are Topaz stations in Limerick.

Thank you, so 70 euro is pretty much enough there and back? wow thats kind of cheapish, I expected more?

Depends on if your car is running right of course,
My €70 is based on 25mpg average. You'll surely do better than that.

Yeah, headgasket was replaced, MAF replaced, running perfect.

Can't talk about Limerick city but I was down in Kerry last week from Dublin and petrol in west Limerick Co. was definitely cheaper than in Dublin.

Coming off the M7, from Adare to Abeyfeale I saw 158/159 whereas at the time you'd be hard pressed to see anything less than 160 in Dublin. It was more expensive on the ring of Kerry but west Limerick was ok on price.

    Just saying.

Shortest Route and ease of Route: N7/M7

Loads of Topas stations and other cheaper Petrol stations in Limerick than Dublin, if you know where to look.
    http://www.topazenergy.ie/en/topaz-world/location-map/ <- Look here

To get to Limerick. Get to the M50 heading towards the Red Cow and then Follow the Road signs to Limerick (There is loads) which get you on to the N7 (If you follow the signs). You join the M7 At Nass bypass (More Limerick Signs). Other than that you cannot miss Limerick, To ensure you get there, STAY ON the M7 motorway and DO NOT GET OFF. M7 ends outside Limerick City. Once you get past Naas, there is no petrol station on the M7 road, unless you get off to nearby towns along the route. There is plenty of petrol stations on the N7 between Dublin Red Cow and Naas.
A full tank of gas on my 1.4L petrol get me to Dublin and back to Limerick with 1/4 tank of petrol to spare, on my regular trips to Dublin (to attend matches in both Croke Park and Lansdowne Road) and back. It costs me €60 euros to fill it when close to empty. I do not go past 120kph and have cruise control and plan my overtakes without excessive acceleration or braking. If you have a bigger gas guzzler or have a heavier foot than me, that is a different story.

Quite, way too much thought being put into popping down the road.. Im thinking the local accent by prove more difficult than the supply of petrol.
Do they take Euros there or are their currency convertors in route? ;)

Just goes to show that everywhere outside Dublin is TOO FAR AWAY

Id comfortably make Naas to Cork and back on €70 petrol in my Integra! Dublin to Limerick shouldnt be that much.

Dublin to Limerick is around 120 miles and takes just under 2 hours these days. OP, just remember there is a toll barrier at Portlaoise - €1.90 each way.

I think you should go via Cork, or perhaps Galway. Much more scenic motorways.

p.s. Don't give the Gardai any cheek down that way.

I've an 03 318ci and in college in Tralee and I'm from Dundalk. I do Dundalk-Tralee and back on 85 weekly. So 70 will definitely be enough from Dublin-Limerick and back.

I drove Dublin to Killarney and back last week on a full tank 1.6 07 316 Petrol with 1/4 to spare. A full tank will do you more than a round trip to Limerick!

If you want to avoid the toll get off the motorway at exit 18 (Mountrath) and rejoin the motorway at exit 21 (Borris in Ossory). Its a straight forward drive and takes about the same time as going on the motorway

No, it takes way longer and is a pain in the arse. Toll ftw!

You must have the shoe well down on the motorway!! Myself and a mate done a test when it opened first. He took the ramp at exit 18 and I went the old road. Both stuck to the limits etc. I was waiting for him at the ramp in borris. Now in fairness I travel that road a lot and know it well so maybe that helped

Nope 130ish, I think ur mate must have reversed;)
I know the road pretty well meself having lived in tipp and worked in dublin (or somewhere that required flying from dublin) for the last 20 years.
I live one side of roscrea and the new motorway cut nearly 30 mins off my trip to the airport.

    Sorry for going OT, OP

    Genuinely no.

    Genuinely no.

    Okay.

    Just briefly:
    1) I wish to stay in Ireland and work in my field after finishing college.
    2) I wish to move to Midlands-West of Ireland.
    3) I realized that some parts of Ireland are still kind of different as in culture and even language.
    4) 70 euro was indeed enough to go to Limerick, have some drive around there, and back and I still have fuel remaining.
    5) I got to Limerick in 1.30 Hours while I thought it's 2.30 hours to get there.
If before I wanted to live in London, now I want to stay here :D

Well from Dublin city centre to limerick city centre is 197km.
That's an average of 131kmph, including going through city centre.

Now if you could do newlands cross in say 15 mins from o connell bridge, and o Connell street limerick in 15 mins from motorway you could knock 20kms off the motorway kms but you've only got an hour to do 170kms, which everybody knows is an average speed of 170kmph.

Now of course we don't know if we're talking county Dublin (right on the kildare border) to county limerick (right on the Tipperary border)

I was interested to read this thread, as at the moment I'm regularly driving Dublin-Limerick and return, which by my measurement is 188km each way.

I did a little test lately. Leaving Limerick I filled the tank with Petrol. Arrived in Dublin, and didn't use the car again until my return journey. On arriving back to Limerick, I re-filled the tank, and found the return journey had cost me almost exactly €40 in petrol.

This is driving a 1.2l Fiesta. So, reading the numbers quote in this thread, I'm concluding that there is a real advantage to driving a smaller car.

Also, I must be a fairly efficient driver :).

Can't say though, that I would be as excited about Limerick as OP....

That's an average of around 41mpg which is pretty good as an average.

1)My mistake actually, I left Dublin at 4 PM and got to Limerick by 6 PM, so that's around two hours +/- 10 minutes.
    2) I am not 12, I am 20 which is close enough :P
    3) I've been living in city centre (Gardiner Street) for past few years and there is this construction site outside of my window which drives me mad, which is probably the reason I find Limerick and Midlands kind of great, because all I saw around was mountains, private houses, lands and the air was quite unusual (probably because it's not city centre)
    4) My average speed was 130 km/h on M7.
    5) Some of the **** I've seen on motorways is just weird, I saw a huge truck overtaking other truck at the speed of like 120 km/h.
Also I noticed people who drive on M7 and outside of Dublin are kind of more educated on how to use lanes, I mean on M50 there could be traffic going (1-2-3) = 80 kmh/100 kmh/ 80 kmh and so on while I noticed when driving there people kind of straight away pull into the 1st lane if somebody closes to them from behind.

Also on the way home, it was 21:30 I wanted to get few drinks, so I pulled into some random town, got drinks and well, it's pretty cool because the people in that town were kind of more friendlier than in Dublin on average, his accent was completely different too, I could barely understand him as well as he could barely understand me. Then I checked receipt and the town was called Roscrea.

I think it's pretty cool that some of the towns/counties in Ireland still have their own kind of like a sub-culture, language differences.

Come down to Kerry to find the real country, don't forget your passport and paperwork for when crossing the border in from Co. Cork;)

Trust me, every county in Ireland has many sub cultures and the accents and vocabulary vary even within counties. Inner city northside Dublin is not representative of the country as a whole. It's good to see someone interested in exploring; try some of the non motorway routes as well.

Agree that its worth paying the toll on the M7. These days there's an awful lot of agricultural machines about and I'd avoid the country roads. At weekends in the summer it's even worse because you have a lot of people going to agricultural shows, vintage cars going (very slowly) to rallies, daddies towing horse boxes to gymkhanas and all that sort of activity. I drove down to Kerry a few weeks ago and went through Mountrath, Borris etc., I went back via the motorway and paid the toll.

I don't mind paying toll since I got a tag, before that I hated it.
