Question - Valid Student Identification (Student Card Expiry Dates)

    Hi all,

I have a query regarding valid student identification.

From what I have read and understand, Irish Rail now accept normal college student cards as a form of ID. They also state in their terms and conditions that cards with no expiry date are valid for four years from the date of issue.

My college student card has no expiry date, but was issued in 2009. Will I be able to use this to avail of student fees during 2013, or do they count 2009 as one year thus rendering the card as a non-valid form of student identification in 2013, even if the card was issued in September 2009 (it doesn't have the date on the card, just the year)?

    Thanks.

If it was issued for the academic year starting September 2009 it will be valid up to September 2013

It was, yes, but as it doesn't have September on the card (just the year 2009) I thought it might cause a bit of hassle.

Thanks for your reply, it's much appreciated. :)

Careful, all of that only applies for Intercity routes (for some odd reason known only to Irish Rail).

For any other routes, you need the Student Travelcard... although adult point-to-point tickets are often cheaper depending on your route.

Don't give them an excuse to fine you, they'll look for any reason.

Are you still in college ?

When was this changed? I bought a ticket to Wexford last week and needed my Student Travelcard number in order to purchase the ticket.

Use 123456 with valid collage ID to purchase student tickets at TMV's.

Other normal college id has been accepted for some time now when buying intercity tickets only! It was introduced during one of the student promotions and has been kept running.

If travelling on commuter(including Portlaoise commuter) or dart services the student travelcard is still required.

It didn't say that on the TMV I used, and the ticket is printed with valid only with a Student Travelcard, which seems to suggest otherwise. I'm not saying that it's not the case, but the tickets lead you to believe that it's STC only.
