Passat - Coolant Trouble?

    Hi ,

My 1.6 petrol Passat has been giving me a lot of trouble recently. It had been burning oil for the last 7/8 months and I've had to change the plugs a number of times as they were getting clogged causing the engine management light to flash.

I've recently left the car idle in my driveway for about the last 6/7 weeks and now it won't even start - It initially started about 2 weekends ago with a jump start but its been idle again since then . Now it wont start at all even with a jump start. When i turn the key in the ignition the coolant warning lamp beeps 3 or 4 times and the coolant gauge goes all the way over to the right hand side ( It usually stayed below the middle if the car is running ok ) .

The coolant level in the car is below the recommended minimum - would this be the problem. I'm fairly clueless about cars tbh , the guy at my local petrol station reckons it could be an issue with the head gasket. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem? It was serviced last Christmas.

If your losing Both oil and water then it does point to a head gasket, although you could be leaking both fluids.

The main thing here is that it wouldn't stop the car from staying after lying up.

When you turn the key, what happens? Does it try start or do you hear a click from the bay or anything?
When you do it while jumping it does anything change?

Not a peep out of it when i start it - central locking won't work - can only use driver door. When i turn the key nothing happens.

Yesterday when i had jump leads on it the dash worked & the central locking worked. When i turned the key the coolant warning lamp beeped 3 times & the coolant gauge went all the way to the right . There was then a clicking sound when i went to start it but nothing happened engine wise.

The clicking your hearing is the starter sticking. So your battery is dead and when you give it power the starter is stuck and preventing the car turning over.
Giving the starter a light tap of a hammer can unlodge it but I take no responsibility for what's done :)

    Thats my two cents anyway.

me reckons clicking sound indicate, that not enough power in battery ... if you using thin jumpleads to start car, it is not transferring enough power, causing starter click, obviously starter wont start car until it will have enough power delivered.

Did car had a lot of smoke when it was working ?

when you pull out oil dipstick , what color is oil ?

is coolant normal color ? i mean is it not brown ish ?
