Yep it will eventually take over from the airbus. The a300 done the job size wise but they are been phased out. The 757 would be too small and the 777 too big.

Guys, just to dispel the myth.... The MD11 is not planned to replace the scheduled A300 out of DUB any time soon. It will however be a visitor from time to time as will the 757.

The fleet plan for FedEx having just retired the last 727 officially in June is to continue to retire the A310s which will be replaced by more 757s. The MD-10s will begin hitting the boneyard from next month when it's replacement the 767 enters service with Fedex for the first time. None of the 767s are scheduled for EU ops in the near to middle term. The A300 is not being retired at all at this point and is expected to continue ops in Europe for the foreseeable.

Fedex have 71 A300s in the fleet, though only a handful are based in Europe. The European-based ones are all conversions of A300-600 pax aircraft.

Spoke to a chap from FedEx this afternoon and he explained that today's MD-11 was brought in to train the crews in their use.
He said that the A300s would continue to be used with the MD-11 used as a standby replacement when required.
The MD11 will be used on at least 1 Friday each month to ensure the crews are kept current.

Would this be the first time FedEx flew their MD-11 into Dublin? Asking because I do recall seeing one parked at the remote stand last year in early September. Definitely remember the FedEx livery and a third engine on the tail. Could someone confirm this for me please?

I think you are recalling these World MD-11s (on 1 September last), as no Fedex MD-11 has visited Dublin before.

I missed those. Caught the 747 World Airways though. What about DC-10? Is that possible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

I don't recall any DC-10s having visited Dublin for several years.

No FedEx MD11s have been through Dublin this was the first one. DC10s / MD10s did fuel stop in SNN however on their way to and from conversion.

Don't expect to see the MD11 quite so often as monthly but it will be a visiting occasionally alright...
