Does anyone know where I can get lime in the east Mayo, south Sligo area? Also can you shake lime yourself with fertiliser spreader or is it better to get contractor to apply it?

Get a contractor to do it. They have the machinery and the know how. The quarry can tell you who spreads in your area.

Roadstone in Boyle and Castlebar and Hanly Brothers in Elphin supply ground lime. I think both Harringtons in Kilkelly and Grogans from Ballyhaunis do as well.

Cant remember exactly but the last time I got lime is was either €22 or €24 per tonne spread. That was nearly 3 years ago though.

You could use granulated lime, that can be spread with a fert spreader, but depends really on volume and what your spreading the lime for.

I'm looking to raise the pH, it's on five acres, awaiting the soil test but I'm sure that will confirm it's quite low. Does granulated lime work out much cheaper? Is it as effective?

Steer clear of the gran lime.

Wait to see result of test and go from there

Can lime be added post seeding? Is it possible it could damage seedlings as they are growing?

A possibility but norm is to spread prior to finally cultivation so it is spread through the soil profile

Prob could be done up to 4 days after sowing but would be damaging seedlings after that. Lime gear is heavy equipment and would rut soft cultivated ground very easily.

can be done no problem, aslong as conditions allow

Roughly how soon after spreading lime could cattle be let back on the ground, taking average rainfall for this time of year into account.

I spread the whole farm with 2 tonne an acre even where the livestock were grazing it didn't do them any harm.

How often do you spread lime sam ????
Was talking to a friend of mine today who is a rep for a fertilizer crowd .

He is taking soil samples for me in a forthnight when the last of the fertiliser has left the soil , however he owns a neighbouring farm and our lands would be quite similar .

Both our farms havent been limed in a long time and are well over due .

He said he is going to spread 2 tonne per acre for the next 3 years on his farm ..

    Seems an awful lot ???
Do you put it out every year at that rate ???

Last time I soil sampled was during reps was short 5 tonne/acre. I spread 2t/acre first year 2t/acre second year and 1t/acre fourth year. That was how my planner advised me to spread it. Outside of reps you would be better off spreading 1/5 of the farm every year to stay at correct ph and it will spread the cost as well. Getting the right ph makes a big difference to grass growth and fertilizer works more efficiently. Spreading too much is a waste get a soil sample.

    Yes definitely.
Spread 2 bags to the acre on ground with some moss. Moss has cleared and grass growth is improved.
Some I sowed mixed with fert and some a week seperate. Noticed no difference even though they say to seperate.

50kgs of CAN uses 50 kgs of lime as a rue of thumb.
