Lamb stew - what red wine to use?

    Hi all,

I am making lamb stew for dinner tonight, but have no port. I usually add 1-2 table spoons.

Is there any red wine that I can use in it? I don't drink wine so haven't a clue about it, and I'd like something that can be bought in a quarter bottle, instead of a large bottle.

    Any help appreciated!

Something fruity and sweet like merlot will do you nicely to replace port. You should be able to get a quarter bottle easily - failing merlot, try a cabernet sauvignon.

    Hi Toast,
I think Tesco sell half or quarter bottles that come in a carton..wouldn't imagine they'd be very pleasant to drink, but should be fine for cooking. If French, I would recommend a Burgundy or Cotes du Rhone
    Loire.
