Got a letter from my college this morning with a date to go down and register. Included was a letter saying if I want to apply for "dispersed VTOS" I must apply on a certain date/time and that it's first come first served. Is that something I can apply for, and what is it? Is it different from BTEA?

Dispersed VTOS, IICR, is simply regular VTOS, but you are just studying among a group of people who could be there on different schemes or none at all. The alternative, core VTOS, is a group of people studying under the same scheme in a designated VTOS centre. Usually schools for dispersed VTOS might only have a few special places, but it gives you the opportunity to claim VTOS and study in the college you want.

Thanks for the reply, is there any other differences that you know of? I'm curious, as I am receiving the couples rate of JA, and when I get BTEA it will stay at that reduced amount, is the VTOS the maximum amount of JA? The extra €60 a week between us would be a HUGE help (My OH is also starting a course)

    Rates of Payment

Persons in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit receive a weekly training allowance equivalent to the maximum personal rate of Jobseeker's Benefit. Any means which have been assessed are disregarded. Also, increases in respect of qualified adult and child dependents continue to be paid while there is an underlying entitlement to such increases on Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit.

This is taken from the Welfare site, I don't fully understand it, but it sounds to me like your payment doesn't really change? Simply that you will be given the maximum amount you personally would be entitled to if you were claiming JB, and an increase for your partner. Doesn't seem to be any different to BTEA in that regard, although I could be reading it wrong.

Hmm yeah that is confusing... I'll go in and apply anyways and ask them a few questions, it's worth a shot

VTOS and BTEA payments are similarly handled.

From January 2013, VTOS participants who move from jobseeker's payments will no longer have their new payments increased to the maximum €188 per week, in cases where their jobseeker's payment is less than this. However, people under 25 will continue to receive a top-up rate of up to €160 per week. This will apply to new participants only. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/education/returning_to_education/vocational_training_opportunities_scheme.html
