If you get 50 recommendations, are you going to call to every one of them. Just pick a dealer and bring a mechanic with you. Simples.

Well if the same dealer pops up a few times I'll be pointed in the right direction? No harm getting opinions anyway!

    Moving to the Motors forum

It would help if you said what geographic area you are in.

Yeah the Dublin area! Bought last car in ballymount area and had so much grief with it! Fed up with car dealers! Just love to know if there is a honest dealer out there! Or are they all cowboys

Thanks! Should have said I was in the Dublin area! But look may travel anywhere if it means I get a good car!

    Majority are cowboys.

Best advice is buy privately but be selective about who you buy from. bring a mechanic with you always.

You can find steals buying privately, always look for service history and don't buy from shady characters!

He isn't a huge distance from Dublin as he is just outside Portlaoise just off the M7. Depending where in Dublin you are he is about an hours drive.

Not true imo, yes there are cowboys out there but there are also decent dealers out there too, like any business there always bad apples.

I bought a used car recently from a small dealer and there were a few small things that needed sorted. One example was a front indicator lens had a crack in it from a stone chip. Dealer is an hour's drive from me but he ordered a replacement OEM part from the local main and posted it up to me.

Yeah I know, maybe you can't tar them all with the same brush! But after the last time dealing with very questionable dealer, not too sure who you can trust out there! Just need a few names of some good ones people have dealt with??

I'd work off finding the right car first and then do a bit of research on the dealer who is selling it.

Yeah have been doing that as well. Some of them when you look for a review nothing comes up on a search! would a Simi dealer be a safe bet? Or just keep bringing a mechanic with me and hope I don't get another crap car?

Have you read Limerick Man's sticky on buying a new car? I'd start there.

The SIMI are nothing more than a self serving dealers club. They add no value when it comes to the consumer.

Is there no safety net then dealing with any car dealers if things go wrong then?

No 100% fool proof way. But you can limit the risk by doing proper due diligence on any car you are seriously considering to buy. By this you get a mechanic to inspect it, study and verify it's service history plus do the relevant car history checks. Also get in writing from the dealer the terms of the warranty i.e. what specifically is covered. Your best weapon is knowledge.

If you have a genuine warranty dispute with the dealer then you still have protection for recourse through the small claims court.

You can always make a quick judgement when talking to the sales guy. A genuine dealer will be upfront about the car and will give honest answers to your questions, dodgy dealers tend to respond with 'yes' to every question and fob you of with BS answers. If they can't produce the registration cert on the spot for example, walk.

I was ringing around a few years ago and got completely p1ssed of with the BS I was getting over the phone.

    Here's a typical example:

Me: Hi, my name is xx xx, I see you have a 2009 yy yy for sale, the ad. doesn't mention the status of the NCT, does it have a current NCT?
    Dealer: We'll guarantee the NCT.

    Me: What does that mean?
Dealer: You put it in for the NCT and if it fails, bring it back to us and we'll sort it out.

Me: Well why don't you submit it for the NCT and get any issues sorted out so that the person who buys it doesn't have that hassle, plus wouldn't you be able to ask for more with a two year NCT disc on the windscreen?
Dealer: We don't have time at the moment but she's a great number and will fly through the NCT.

Those bold words should ring alarm bells when you hear them from the sales guy, run a mile.

I eventually decide to stop tearing lumps of hair out of my head and stopped wasting my time with these people.

I'm sure there are good independent dealers, especially if they have fixed premises but the guys who operate from prefabs with Alsatian dogs patrolling the compound I would run a mile from.

Thanks for that advice. That's how exactly I've been stung! Have the car I bought off these shower for about a 5 week's and have driving it only about a week of that time! Said it was fully serviced= not done. Not a drop of oil in the engine! Engine light keeps coming on! They must be just resetting it everytime! Oh and still not received the log book!! Never ever dealing with this crowd again!

I can definitely recommend these guys in Rathdrum.

I have no connection with them other than a good buying experience.
