    Hi Guys,

    I'm considering the following car:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Golf/Highline/37013758841525390/advert?channel=CARS

I have the price down to 15,100 on this right now and would like your opinions on if this is a fair price for the car. I am interested in this one over the majority of others for sale at the moment because of its higher spec and 2L TDI.

    Thanks Guys,

    HS.

If you're going to look at getting a 2.0TDi you should be looking to get the 140/170 HP versions. I think you may as well opt for the 1.6TDi at that stage as it will be cheaper to buy/tax and has only 5hp less than that 2.0

So you're saying he should buy a car that is either dearer or cheaper to tax, just not this one which is in the middle? Why?

Can't help but think that car is over priced.

Similar spec, year newer, similar power with less mileage:
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Golf/1.6-tdi-/6413358622333460/advert?channel=CARS

Different car, similar spec, more power and lower miles:
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Mondeo/TDCI-ZET/37313733830567080/advert?channel=CARS

Similar size, nice spec, lower miles and more power. Private sale though:

I had the same thoughts, but the cheapest 2.0 TDI 140 is the following one which is up at 20,950:

    http://ext.volkswagen.ie/used-cars/page/car-detail/?vehicle=69682_1545980

Assuming I could get this one for 19,500, that would be 4,500 more for 45k / 2 years newer.

    Thoughts,

    HS.

What do you think would be a fair price? I like the car.

My reasoning is that it's pointless paying a premium for the 110hp 2.0 instead of just going for the 105hp 1.6. You won't notice much if any difference.

That's a ridiculous price for a 4 year old diesel Golf imo but not surprising from a main dealer.

That is a lovely looking car.

Yeah, I agree. I will go and take a look at it.

That is what they are worth though. We got more than €15k for a similar car a few months back.

Pretty much the same reason as below. That car was c. €27k new 4 years and 100k km ago. It's an in demand car no doubt hence the high residuals but I do think there is better value out there. Still one of the best cars of that size IMO, but you do pay well for it.

Looking at the figures on Parkers, it looks like you're right. The 110 2.0 has the same torque figure as the 105 1.6, which is a bit mad, and it pushes out more CO2 than the 140 bhp 2.0, so it could actually cost more to tax than the more powerful model.

How did VW sell it in the first place?

The 1.6 105bhp and the 2.0 110bhp Golfs both cost the same to tax.

Ah you're right, thought the 2.0 was a bit more to tax, my mistake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 831 ✭✭✭HotSwap

    2.0 140bhp is €270 Tax
    1.6 105bhp and 2.0 110bhp are €200 Tax

Insurance is coming in at ~600 for the 2.0 140bhp valued at 15,000.

The other consideration here is that I am financing the cars and the VW main dealer is offering 5.9% APR Vs 11.1% APR that I am getting elsewhere.

Thanks for all the comments so far guys.

    HS.

We got a 3.5 year old passat 2l 140 with 75k miles last year January for 10200 euros all inclusive of VRT. There isnt anyway Id pay much more as it will be only worth 8 in 1-2 years. I think the fleets dump 3 year old cars onto the UK market in October at the plate change and prices take a dive there. Thats the time to buy over there.

I have a 2012 golf bluemotion with about 40k miles on it. car tax is E180 a year.I looked at trading it in against a mark 7 golf was only being allowed E18300 for it so i didnt bother. Actually prefer the look of the mark 6.

Congrats - looks lovely. Drove one a few months ago and they are pretty pokey.

Hillside are good to deal with as well, maybe slightly rough around the edges, but you get what you see. They've bought some of the mega mileage stuff we've had back, and it appears on-line the following day with the correct mileage and all details correct.

Maybe it was my one you drove :)

Good to hear that, I have to say they were very accommodating. I arranged to bring my mechanic along and they allowed us to use their ramp so we could do a full vehicle inspection, even let us borrow a torch to have a closer look.

Do you know if this is the 140 BHP Version?
Its not got the touchscreen RCD510 radio.
It says it has OEM Bluetooth, mine had a Parrot MKI 9200.
Its got a tow bar, which I never like to see, unless it was used to carry bikes on the back.
