is there a rule of thumb in how much you can get off a car. i'm looking at buying a passat asking price 17950 seems very competitive looking at other cars same age and spec. should I get it for much cheaper?

I don't see why you should, but there's no harm trying
If its already cheaper than comparable cars, you wouldn't feel too hard done by.

There's not a lot of haggle room under 2k especially if the car is priced lower than comparative cars. Consider yourself lucky if you get €50 off.

I was selling a car years ago and had about 30 calls about it the morning it went on autotrader. A guy came to see it that lunch time, I told him the price was fixed and I wasn't taking one cent less than my asking price. He wanted the car and told me so several times and then started haggling. After 10 minutes if me refusing every offer he made I said that I was leaving and got into the car. He still wouldn't offer me the asking price so I drive off. He rang me 15 minutes later and offered me asking, I told him too late, he had his chance and messed me about. He rang back 20 minutes later offering me €50 more than asking and when I still refused upped that to €100! I still refused as he was given fair warning when viewing the car. I sold the car later that evening for my asking price.

If you really want the car and its a good price then pay the price.

If your not embarrassed by your first offer you're offering too much ;)

Bottom line, what is the value of the Passat, and are you getting a good deal ? If it's value is more than the asking price then you are getting a good deal already, so you could chance your arm haggling, but if you pay the full asking, you are still getting a good deal ?

What year / spec Passat ?

    If it's a 2012, 2.0TDi then go for it ! If it's a 2010, 1.6TDi then keep shopping !
