Hi, friends micra (1.0.l.. '97 )reverse light doesnt work ,when fited good working switch, still no working, garage advised change a gearbox ( yea.. right) . Found in other forums that somebody fitted manual switch. would it pass NCT with manual switch ? ( I mean when with hand flip the switch when put in reverse, and when finished, flip it back to switch off reverse light).

Can't see that passing. Need to get on it with a multimeter and a diagram.
    REVERSE LAMP(S)
    Method of Testing
Where a reverse lamp is fitted, check to ensure that when in use, it provides a white light which is clearly visible.
    ITEM
    REASONS FOR FAILURE
    Reverse Lamp
    1
    Not working or faulty.
    2
    Missing or not clearly visible.
    3
    Not white in colour.
    4
    Lens broken or missing.
    5
    Insecurely mounted.
    6
    Reversing lamp remains illuminated after
    reverse gear has been disengaged.

A manual switch should be OK if there's a clearly visible warning light on the dash, however I find it hard to believe that the original is not fixable. Has the lamp unit been checked out?

    full story.

Thats my friends micra. failed nct on revers light. he went to garage, they first said, need switch, which is in gearbox, but need to order. after couple days they fitted new switch, light still not come up. .... their advice - need to change gearbox, as some little thing inside which engage reverse switch is broken .

i looked on wiring, joint two wires (from four) , and light came on ... so, deffo problem with gearbox or switch.
i never heard that thing goes, but in dedicated micra forum confirmed, that this is pretty common problem on micras.

That's rough. Could you probably bodge a new switch in there somewhere at the bottom of the gear stick or something.

I hadn't realised that a non-working reverse lamp was a failure point for the NCT, so I looked it up and here's what it says:

It seems to me that the critical words are "where fitted". So if you removed the bulb and blanked off the lense it should pass. The only problem then would be to convince the tester!

yea, i thought about it, looked under gearstick gator, there is flat as ***** . I have few ideas.... wonder what switch to pick ? was thinking make my own, but wires cannot touch body.... also it is not worth a hassle, i believe there number not expensive switches , but need find one which works only when pressed.... for nct shall be fine even if reverse light goes on when put in 2 and 4 th gear ?? :pac:

Reverse light in 2cnd and 4th would not be a good idea.

A definite failure, see item 6 in "Reasons for failure" in my post 8 above.
