I am looking for inspiration for my living room. It's a smallish north facing room with a bay window. The house was built in the late 1940s. The room has a black cast iron fireplace with a shelving unit in one of the alcoves. The couches are black leather, walls are cream and the curtains are guess what ... black and cream with silvery detail. The floor is oak. I think that's all the details. The room also has a dado rail. Any ideas anyone please.

You could try Farrow & Ball elephants breath. I have a similar house (1930's) with a dado rail and it came out excellent. Use a white on the dado rails, skirting etc. Nice colour for a period property. It will bring out the black fireplace as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mickyyellow, that is a beautiful colour. It's very soft and warm. Did you use it on the entire wall (under and over the dado rail)

No problem at all. I reckon keeping the wall one colour suits. the dado rail will really stand out if it's pure white (a nice gloss). good luck with the DIY!

    Hi Mick,
The budget didn't stretch to Farrow and Ball so I chose a soft grey from the Crown range. I really like the colour because it changes tone throughout the day. Got the light fitting half price, threw in a few new cushions and voila - a brand new room for about €100.

Very nice - what crown colours did you use? I'm looking at Dulux greys - french mists and silverwood.

Incidentally while the F&B elephants breath looks nice the name makes me think of halitosis:o

Strange name for a paint alright. I used Soft marble from Crown

Trade paint suppliers should be able to match Farrow and Ball colours with their own brand paint. I've used Elephant's Breath and Cornforth White colours in Johnstone paint and it is very good. The F&B website is worth a look too for finding colours to match your choice.

We've got French Mists in our kitchen. It's lovely, but bizarrely seems quite lilacy in the morning sun, definately greyer under artifical light or in the evening.

Sorry Adam, I didn't use Dulux, I used Crown paint. The colour was Soft Marble. You best bet would be to get a couple of tester posts and try them out.

I have used Modernism which is a Dulux colour and it turned out lovely. I did what one poster mentioned above and went to Johnstones and they matched the colour. Quality was as good and the colour was fine too..
