Attempted insurance fraud

I was travelling on the M8 to Cahir link road today (if anyone knows it, the one divided by the metal wires) and as I came to the roundabout near Cahir there was a silver BMW waiting to enter it in front of me.

There was traffic on the roundabout so he was just waiting to move off while I approached. As I came to a stop behind him the last of the traffic was gone and he had a clear road but he wasn't looking ahead but in his rear view mirror at me.

I had left about a 2-3ft. gap between him and I when his reverse lights came on, I don't know how I thought of it but I immediately drove forward to close the gap between the cars so he didn't have space to gain enough momentum to do damage, just as I stopped nearer to him, another car appeared behind me and the guy in the BMW just drove off.
He had a girl with him in the passenger seat and I was alone so I was thinking if both of them said I hit the car I wouldn't be able to prove otherwise.

I'm just posting here to see who ye think I should report this to.

I got his reg. and had a good look at him when I passed him on a different roundabout nearer Clonmel.

Could any of the mods let me know if I can post the reg and a description in case he catches someone out?

Definitely investing in a dash cam!!

Think you may be overdoing the conspiracy here.

    Did he actually move backwards?

It's easy enough to miss a gear and find reverse by mistake. I've done it plenty of times.

moving towards some one like that is likely to increase the damage done. I'd be looking to move away as quick and safe as possible. Have you notified the gardai?

Reverse? By mistake? It's purposefully difficult to mistake!

Haven't spoken to the Gardai yet, I thought they wouldn't really be interested seeing as no damage was done, I honestly didn't even have time to think about moving back... I'm just glad he moved on.
Should I report it to the insurance companies aswell?

I think the presence of the car behind me was the main reason he went on his way..

A dash-cam is a necessity for sure, don't leave home without one as it could save you a lot of hassle ;)

Do not post the Licence plate here. It is a accident so report it to the gardai immediately even with little or no damage occurs.

To leave the scene of an accident, and failing to report an accident are offences even if you are the cause of the accident or the victim.

    Sure about that?

    How was it an accident?

The OP still hasn't said if he even moved back at all.

Making much ado about nothing, methinks.

It's not an accident. No one hit anyone.

Plus, the OP stated that they drove towards the reversing car. IMO that makes them at fault if there was an accident

Sorry, I should have made it more obvious that he did move back but stopped just as the car appeared behind me.

Honestly, I wouldn't have taken as much notice of the whole thing if I hadn't seen him staring in the rear view mirror for the whole time... like he was waiting for the chance to do it..

I agree with that, that I would have been at fault if there was contact as I drove forward.

I would have got the blame either way though with no way to prove anything if he reversed into me so my thinking was the less space he had to build up speed the less damage to my car.
