I came across this in a model shop today and found it a very strange livery, but it seems it was leased into Aer Lingus in 1989, it is limited edition so one for the collectors i think

Yep correct, leased from ATA (American trans air) for extra summer capacity.
There are a couple pics of it online. Think it operated only one summer like this.

It felt heavy so i guess it was diecast and made by Inflight, he did say it was a limited edition to less than 100, and it was 1:200 scale

Thanks for the info. Bit too much for my pocket I'm afraid.

Here are a couple more shots of Aer Lingus L1011s in various schemes, including full Aer Lingus colours.

Full livery looked fantastic on the Tristar, but then again considering it even made the MD11 look somewhat OK for once it might just do that.

First two hires from British Caledonian later BA.

Full livery is also available as a due cast 1:200 model.

It was just "Caledonian" at that stage, having taken over the previous British Airtours charter operation in 1988. The original BCAL was swallowed up by BA in December 1987.

I flew back from JFK on G-BBAF in 1996, though it was all-white with just a green shamrock on the tail. There can't have been more than 20 passengers on board and all the central seats and overhead bins were removed. With the aid of a 100 kt tailwind we were home at least 90 minutes ahead of schedule.

This must be the livery you have in mind:

I thought that was a BA plane or something with an AerLingus one parked behind it at first look !

That's it pretty much, but the titles were painted out/removed. It was night-time so I don't know whether or not the Caledonian blue belly was present: it must have been.
