Will the apps on windows 8 be using up my small NBS satellite broadband allowance all the time?
I need to replace my computer and I'm trying to decide whether to go for windows 8por or windows 7pro.

If you allow apps to run in the background, such as windows mail, they will check your inbox at set intervals and download new mail, alerts etc.

You can change settings for this and the windows 8 OS has "Metered Internet Connection" rules baked right in, so you can change app settings and tell it to treat your internet as metered so it wont try to automatically download updates as frequently, etc. etc.

Apparently this won't work with an Ethernet connection.

Presuming you don't wish to run those apps, correct.

If you never run or configure things like the mail app, they have no reason to run. and dont.
