Faulty Petrol Gauge (Mk4 Golf)

How's it going folks, the petrol light/gauge on my car (Mk4 Golf) has become faulty - I'll put €30 petrol in and the needle will move but while I'm driving it goes up and down, especially when going around corners. The light is constantly going on and off, beeping to let me know fuel is running low and the needle itself goes from half full to empty within a few seconds and then back to half full again.

Does anyone know if this is a big (expensive) thing to fix? Would like to get it sorted as it's really doing my head in.

It could be either a faulty fuel level sender (it's located in the tank) or a faulty instrument cluster.

    Where are you based?

    Is your speedometer working?

Based in South Dublin (Dundrum) and no, the speedometer has not been working correctly for a while.

The faulty speedometer is causing the fuel gauge to behave erratically. If you fix the speedo the fuel gauge will be ok as well.

Do you mean the sensor or the gauge?

The fuel gauge on these behaves differently when the car is moving than when it is not moving. In a nutshell when the car is stationary the gauge is set up to respond instantly to changes in fuel level. When the car is moving it switches into a more delayed response time.

So in the case of the OP's car where the speedo is not working the instrument cluster thinks the car is stationary when it is in fact moving. This means the gauge will respond instantly to any changes in fuel level caused by movement of fuel in the tank when cornering, braking, accelerating, etc.

There is nothing actually wrong with the sender or gauge, the problem is caused by the incorrect vehicle speed reading.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Does anyone have an idea of how much it should cost to get the speedo fixed?
