Irish Rail route maps on ICRs

Made one of my increasingly rare trips by IE yesterday and couldn't help but notice that - almost three years since closure - the Waterford/Rosslare line is still shown on the route maps in the ICRs. I shouldn't be surprised I suppose, as the MKIIs rattled around with their maps (below) showing the Loughrea branch and WRC years after closure.

Technically the line is still open with no service.

However, that would confuse most people when they enquire about services on that route and find there are none!

Reminds me, I've one of those orange maps in the OP somewhere. Was part of a batch that were printed but never used.

Many of the trains have had the maps updated but there are still some which have not been updated much like the issue with the sockets where the replacements were fitted over a number of months, the maps of course would not be as urgent as the sockets so replacing all the older maps may take longer.

It also still has the Athlone - Mullingar line. Will CIE ever learn?

on a side note, I had a look at google earth the other day & saw remnants of a line between Sligo & Westport, was it ever in use?

That Athlone-Mullingar line may have still been in use when that map was in a train in service.

IE in out of date maps shocker!

JD, bring the tipp-ex bottle with you next time.

(saw a heap of those older orange maps for sale one time, some still in packing material, kicking myself now for not buying one)

It also shows the Great Southern Hotels which haven't been owned by CIE for years. It's a wonder Cobh isn't called 'Queenstown' so at least we know it's post-1922 ;)

FYI the map in the pic, isn't the map that JD spotted on his trip.
The one in the pic is VERY old.

That map in the opening post is from the old Mark II stock and NOT the ICRs.

It is also missing the Dunboyne Clonsilla spur.

maybe both the athlone to mullingar and waterford to Rosslare should be color differently to indicate, Irish rail not bothered or imaginative enough to make these routes sustainable.

Like why isnt there an Connolly to Galway (via mullingar and athlone) railway service even as a change at mullingar with a service to Galway.

It would mean you could get a train from Sligo - Mullingar, Mullingar to Athenry, Athenry to Limerick. Rather than have to do the Radial system via dublin

    Having connectivity enhances all routes

Very schematic now that i look at it
seems to indicate the galway to heuston line joined just outside heuston (as if the Phoneix park tunnel is being used !)

That spur from the galway line is also not used.

That map was not on any train now in service but is an old map off a mark 2 carriage and as is evident from the CIE logo is from pre-Irish Rail days.

That said I notice about half the current maps still show the Rosslare-Waterford line still in use but on newer maps this is gone.

Lads, this isn't the railway enthusiasts forum, what are ICRs and 'MK II's please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,445 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

    ICR = Intercity Railcar
Mk II = Mark II coaching stock (from 1972)
