Car break-ins and comprehensive insurance

    Hey all,

Just a question. I have comprehensive insurance on my car but have never had to ever use it in my 6 years of driving thankfully.

I just heard about a case where a car was broken into and laptop, wallet, etc. all taken and was just wondering how I'd manage if this ever happened to me.

Does an insurance company really cover all of this and compensate you for all of your losses, or do you just get a fixed maximum amount?

I've read my terms and conditions, etc. but if this was specified I didn't notice it.

It'd be under contents cover in your policy, might be mentioned on insurers website or your insurance certificate, rather than T&Cs

All depends what your insurance covers.

    Comprehensive is very general term.

Sometimes even basic basic theft cover (which you get with third party, fire and theft) covers vandalism so they would pay you for damage to your car caused by thief (f.e. broken locks, broken windows, etc).

Comprehensive usually adds other stuff like
    - accidental damage to your car - which might cover your car if you cause an accident, or if it's damaged by someone else and that person can't be find - f.e. parking hit and run.

    - windscreen cover - cover your glass if it breaks.
    - personal accident cover - might pay you for medical expanses, or pay lump sum if you loose your limbs or die.

    - personal effects cover - might cover stuff that you leave in your car - and I believe that's what you are asking about.

Problem here is that I don't think any insurer would cover wallet with money.
Also amount they might pay is very limited and you might need to present proof of purchase. So f.e. if they stole your laptop you might need to show receipt from the shop you bought it.

Generally speaking - don't leave any valuable stuff in the car.
