    Have a mate who is living in Northern Ireland but soon moving up to Ardee to live, just wondering how long have you to be living in the north before you can take a car in VRT FREE or how long do you have to own the car for

    ok his house will be finished early next year so wondering what car he should buy now to bring thru as may as well take in a car with big VRT as no point in taking in a 06 fiesta 1.4tdci which he currently drives and is thinking of changing now anyway.
    What would be the ideal or most sought after car or jeep that would hold its value well

    If he brings a vehicle into the country and is VRT excempt, there will be a restriction on how soon he can sell it on.

    think he has to keep it 12 months but what car with this in mind would be worth going for in that after the year he could sell it and work out ok, he has budget of €16000

    Won't be able to sell for two years, otherwise there is clawback of VRT.

    And let me tell you this, get your sh!t together for them, cos they audit the boll!x out of this.

    He will need lever arch folders of proof of attachment to NI, and they sometimes interview.

    Another tactic I have seen is to delay the decision slightly. Then refuse exemption.

    That puts you in an awkward position then, as no insurance company will insure the car beyond a month; additionally, you can't have a car in the state more than a month if vrt not paid or exemption established. You have to remove it and cannot reenter for 30 days after that - and they audit that too, very heavily.

    Talk about fair procedures.

    They don't give a flying fu¢k. They make more off this than they can be fined for the unfairness.

    12 months according to the revenue Website;
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/tax-relief-transfer-residence.html

    ....unless they changed it without updating their site.

    A car with big vrt is going to have big tax (assuming itll be post 08). Thats going to affect the price when hes looking to sell it.
