My dad has a 2002 E240 Avantgarde and the driver side mirror has discoloured. It's NCT is due and we think it'll fail this time. As far as I can make out, the mirror is heated and has some kind of auto-dimming function. Is this right?

Micksgarbage have this one but it appears to be a low tech replacement

GSF have this one which appears more reassuringly expensive

However when I found this one on ebay it looks as if the two other ones must have big compromises.

In all cases, descriptions are vague and it seems from googling the part number that there are lots of €300 ish options. Whatever the case, my dad would prefer to keep all the functionality or at least make informed decisions about any compromise.

So what do you good people know about these?

If it's gone a sort of a dark, bronzey colour then it's an auto dimming one. Get the part number off the back of the old one - you'd be amazed at the number of different mirror glasses Mercedes produced for one car!

The one Micksgarage have is made by the company who supply Merc (and other manufactures) with there mirror glass and housing. These have the backing plate and heating elements if required. The other option is to buy a new mirror.
