I'm in the same situation as yourself at present, and am edging towards an FR-V to be honest (boot big enough for me).

Only thing I would say, if most of your driving is short distances, you may cause damage to the car before it gets the long runs? I'm no expert on all this technical stuff, but from all the reading I have done, and we will only be doing a lot of short runs, we have decided to go for petrol.

I liked the frv all right quite rare to find a good one though. I'd done similar driving in my Mondeo and it never missed a beat although it was very well looked after car

Also wondering what % discount could I haggle for being a cash buyer would 20% be realistic

There is no set formula. It all depends how keenly priced the car is to begin with against similar cars and how much the car owes the dealer in order for him to make a profit on it's sale.

Chatting to a few dealers over recent months about cars the biggest discount I was ever offered was 10% of the price. Majority were around the 5% mark.
