A Yaris is the best small car to go for Imo.

    Not a yaris :pac:

Ah no eh, Fiat Puntos are a good bet, if you're into french cars, perhaps a Citroen saxo? Opel corsas are going for peanuts nowadays, hop on done deal or something and have a look sure!

Speaking from my experience, I bought a car from a garage once and got it checked over and the guy going on about how great it was and all this, a month later the dashboard caught fire and i lost the car, not saying that happens all the time, basically, weather you but from a garage you'l pay more for the same car or buy privately and pay a reasonable price, just take a mechanic along with you and get it checked, corsa's are an, okish car I wouldn't be a huge fan of them, but they do what they're built for, getting you around, that's as far as they go

If you read the thread title you will see that the op is looking for a 1 liter car. None of the cars you recommended are 1 liter bar the corsa which are not good cars

It beggars belief that you can dismiss a Yaris and then go on to recommend a corsa.:p

The yaris is widely considered to be the best in this class. Micra is pretty good too. Polo's are hardly ever recommended in these threads but I've had one for the last four years and it hasn't done me wrong. I wouldn't be going for anything French or a corsa.

I wouldn't worry about buying privately if you are looking to spend under €2k at that price point then you are much better off spending the money on the car and not paying a premium buying from a garage, you aren't going to get much of warrenty at that price point either. Get a good mechanic to check it over and if it has passed an NCT recently then there can't be too much with it.

No at your budget buying privately is the way to go because at that end of the market a dealer will give little to no warranty so their is no advantage of going that route.

As for the corsa, no they are not a good car, avoid them is my advice.

A yaris. Expect to get a 00 or 01 in great condition for that money.

    Don't bother with dealers.

    I cried writing it :P

But if you ask me, .1 or .2 liters aren't a massive difference, but if you wana be technical about it....

    Take a look at

    Vw polos
    Nissan Micras
    Fiat Cinquecento
Opel Aglia (if that's your thing)
    Daewoo matiz
Seat Arosa or it's vw counterpart the Lupo

    I can go on ;)

Its not just reliability. For a 99 model they're pretty modern, they're safe, they're 1.0 (which a lot of rivals aren't, people will pay more for less) has a timing chain, and has the toyota following.

There is little or no value in buying from a dealer on this sort of budget as any warranty that the dealer has factored into his price will be minimal. Also most dealer stock in this price range tend to be someone else's cast offs they wanted rid of.

Peugeot 206, they are 1.1 litre, but we're hardly going to fall out over 0.1 of a litre!

no focus comes in a 1 litre, either 1.4, 1.6 or 2.0, or maybe in missing one?

That 0.1 of a liter will cost you 100 euro extra per annum on tax though.

I had a Suzuki swift 1998 model 3 cylinder 1 liter hatch back until the SOB kids from local i parked it in stole it and set on fire .
Great car very light great on fuel motor ways at 120kph could do 45MPG easy often 50 mpg and around town seemed to be 40mpg ish .Also biggish boot and folded back seat even very large boot

However if your tallish like me 5 foot 10 or larger then the low seat can create back pains on longer journey or even short journeys if your head hits the roof

A ambulance driver said to me that every crash with this type of car where the speed was 30MPH or higher there
    were never any survivors

However I a single guy and not worried to die and cheap skate so i continued to drive it anyway but if was married with kids would have sold it straight away

however to be fair I don't think any small 1 liter car will have survivors if you crash at speeds exceeding 30mph so if you want more safety buy a big thing

Basically all the Asian cars are the safest bet .Often best I can see they all use the same 3 cylinder 1000cc engine even the modern ones like Hyudia i10 or Kia 1 liter the engine seems to be exact same as the 1998 Suzuki 1L engine

    €131 extra actually as they're 1124cc and taxed as 1.2 ;)

The safety thing is rubbish tbh.

Re the kia Hyundai thing, they are all 4 cylinder engines , they only started doing 3 cylinder petrol and diesel in the last couple of years and the older ones have more in common with mitsubishis than anything,

Depends on the model, the MK1 (original) was fine in 1.4 form. It's the newer heavier model that had trouble.

Check honestjohn.co.uk they have info about what goes wrong in cars. Just check the 'what's bad' section.

Looks a good deal but have the head set on a focus now...what about diesel focus or would petrol be better

I'd get a diesel focus, but the 1.6 PSA engines are prone to damage if not taken care of properly. Seeing as no one in Ireland takes care of their engines then i'd say they'd all by slightly fecked.

The petrol will be a lot heavier on juice but the engine should be more reliable.

By the way i'm not saying the diesel is unreliable, if taken care of it is actually good. Diesels have to be treated differently than petrols and people don't realise that.
