I'm currently using Toyo T1R's, but want to try something different.
I'm putting them on a Honda accord Euro R.

    Any recommendations please?

What's the tyre size and budget ? Budget and performance don't normally go hand in hand but perfomance tyres have certainly got cheaper in the last few years .

I think it's one or the other tbh, budget tyres or performance tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,099 ✭✭✭tonic wine

    205/50/16

I picked up the T1R's for £50 each from camskill last time, which was good bang for buck IMO. They don't list them anymore though.

    Budget €100

    Per tyre?

The 2 main performance tyres i have experience of and always recommend are Goodyear F1's and Michelin Pilot sport 3's in that order. I don't think the Goodyears are availible in anything under 17's.

I always buy my tyres in discount tyres in blanch, they have been cheaper than any online retailer for the last 2 or 3 years. They have a PS3 205/55/16 listed at 99 euro so i would start with them and see what they can do your size for.

I've had f1's on my other car, but can't find them listed for anything smaller then 17's. how did you find the Michelin sports for tyre wear and grip in the wet?

I always think toyo first when I think budget and performance.

Ya, not bad for the money, but wore out very quick being honest.

That's normal, tyres with excellent grip generally wear quicker. That's usually the trade off with them.

    Hankook ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

At that size it's actually relatively inexpensive to get the better brands.

Goodyear Efficientgrip, Bridgestone Turanza, Hankook Ventus Prime, Bridgestone Potenza, Continental PremiumContact 2 are all under (some well under) €100 on eiretyres. Michelin PS3 is just slightly over at €102

I found the PS3's great in the wet and dry but just not on a par with the Goodyears.

Wear rate,i found in 18's the PS3's last longer than the Goodyear Asymmetric 1's but the newer Asymmetric 2's have out lasted any other 18" tyre I've ever had.

Vredestein, Kormoran, Avon ZV3, Falken, Kumho; they are all mid range tyres, I wouldn't consider them budget. They go for about 100e but if you switch to the 205-55-16 you will get a better deal imo.

If you want better wear on the tyre get a V speed rating instead of a W one. The higher spec a tyre is the softer the compound they use to make em to give better grip at high speed but wear faster than standard ones.

The Vredestein Sportrac 5, which is what I have on my Accord, is €94.80 delivered in a 205/50/16 with a V rating.Add a tenner per tyre for fitting and balancing and you've got what I think is a bloody good tyre for just €4 over your budget!

Just to give you other options, the Falken FK452 gets very good reviews over on TypeAccord.co.uk AFAIR, and in that size it's about a few cents cheaper than the Sportrac 5 I mentioned above.

Worth noting that the Falken comes in a W rating, so may be more suited to a Type R!!

It seem to be slightly cheaper on Eiretyres.ie @ €89.80 per tyre, but I can't work out what their delivery charge would be.

    Try these;

    You won't be disappointed.

Ive had Kumho and Falken tires on my car (Integra Type R) most recently and to be honest found both to be perfectly fine. Not the longest wearing tire perhaps, but to be expected from a softer performance compound. Never had any issues with grip in either wet or dry.

I think there are lots of budget tyres being mentioned here but very little performance,i think the Michelin PS3 at 99e fitted is by far the best option so far - if i do say so myself :D no other tyre mentioned would hold a candle to it.

You are basing this on a tyre review website?

    Sure look....

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Michelin/Pilot-Sport-3-PS3.htm

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Nankang/NS2.htm

What one site says another contradicts, tyre websites are ropey.

Have you ever driven a car with a proper performance tyre on it? Like an Asymmetric 2 or a PS3 etc

edit: that's weird there was another post from The Dagda that i replied to but now it's gone! Maybe his PC is on nanknags and now it's in a ditch :)

    I'm not taking the piss.

I've tried the Nankang NS2 and found it good.

    I haven't tried the Michelin PS3.
Is it a better tyre? It probably is.

Seeing as it's twice the price, at least, is it twice as good? I very much doubt it.
I'd be surprised if 2 out of 10 people would be able to recognise any difference either way.

Where did your other reply go ? The one where you linked upa tyre review website and went on about brand snobbery? :D tell me i'm not losing the plot.

What car did you have these Nankangs on?

I realised it was a bit strong so I retyped a new one.

I've had them on a Golf TDI 150 and an Audi A4 TDI 130. My tyre of choice now is Kumho Ecsta LE Sport.

I've had a variety of cars and vans and bought tyres for all of them.
The only time I noticed a really terrible tyre was on a Fiesta diesel van which came with some unknown chinese brand.
I adjusted my driving to suit and when they needed replacing got a reputable brand.

Have you tried the Nankang NS2?

    I certainly have not :D

Have you tried PS3's of F1's ? i had Kumho ectsas on a TDI golf, the are certainly not the worse tyre i've had but the are no performance tyre,do you rate them higher than the Nangers?

What about about uniroyal rainsports 2?

Would they fall under the bracket of proformance/budget?

Well what are you basing your strong opinion on if you haven't even tried them?

I had 2 Subaru Impreza WRX that I would only put F1 (if I was buying in winter - lol) or PZero (if I was buying in summer - lolz) on
but that was when I was a young fella who thought that car mags were relevant to everyday users.

    Were those tyres good? Yes.
Were they worth the premium? No.

I would rate the Nankang and Kumho as very similar, with the Kumho having slightly better wear.
The build quality of the Kumho is a bit better too. If Camskill don't have the Kumho I'll go for the Nankang.

To have such strong views on different tyres without having tried them is silly, IMO, nevermind trying to
say which is "performance" or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭tossy

Well with my experience of the Kumho and the fact you rate them similar to the nankang i think we are coming from different ends of the spectrum.

I appreciate the fact nankang probably aren't as bad as the name the have i.e ditch finders - i've no doubt they have improved over the years, but would i put them on any car of mine ? no i wouldn't and that's not based on snobbery that's based on trying 3 or 4 different performance tyres and finding one i believe to excellent in all areas of driving.

I still say if you want to mix Performance with Budget you get Hankook.
Hard to beat them at the price.

Am i one of those lads? I seriously doubt i'd be able to tell the difference between Kumho or Contis on the road the are both rqually matched mid range tyres, but i would certainly be able to tell the difference between PS3's or F1's and most other tyres mentioned here while doing 120 on the M7 in pouring rain

    I hate wine BTW :)

+1 for the Uniroyal rain sport 2's, I've normally always used bridgestone potenzas on my cars but had a different set of wheels on with the rainsports and liked them. Grip felt equal to the potenzas and better in the wet, along with less roadnoise and bumpiness in comparison.

Fwiw I had a set of nankang ditchfinders briefly on my s2000, in the wet they were a horrible tyre, dry at low speeds didn't cause any hassle but i had them off after a few weeks. I'd be very reluctant to put them on anything performance based especially if you drive it on at all.
