So, the title says it all.

At the moment, I think I have a Shimano 14 - 34t, with a "granny cog". It's ok, but I want more speed for flats. There's times when I've acually spun out on a straight road.

So, I am looking to get something with an 11 cog, but I want to keep the big 34 for uphill, cos it's great.

Anybody know if I can do this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Yes, it will be fine. any mountain bike derailluer should be able to handle that range.

14-34 is most likely a freewheel, 11-34 is most likely a cassette. They are not interchangeable, unless you buy a new wheel with a freehub.

The derailluer Shimano RD-TZ5. I've no idea whether that's any use or not.

I'll admit ignorance to all of this stuff.

Sorry alkos, I'm not really sure what you mean here.

At the moment my rear cogs look a bit like this:

it's a long cage derailluer, it should be fine.

I'm talking about two non-compatible systems of attaching rear cogs to the wheel. If what you have is a freewheel, you can only replace it with another freewheel. As far as I know they start at 13 cogs and may go up to 34, so 11-34 is most likely a cassette.

Excellent info on the subject below:

How many rear cogs do you have currently?

The link the says it has a Shimano MF-TZ20 6-speed. Which is a freewheel, like Alkos says.

    I can't find any 6 speed freewheels with a smaller sprocket than a 14.

The link you posted claims that the bike is 21 speed but it says the cassette is 6 speed, as does my googling.

There are 7 speed freewheels with smaller than 14 tooth little rings - but I would guess you have a 6 speed freewheel and that link is just BS.

6 and an oversized cog for climbing.

    Ta for the link.
