Accounting Qualification for a Systems Accountant?

I graduated with a B.Comm in 2002, followed it up with a H.Dip in Systems Analysis and have worked with ERP / Finance Systems for the last decade or so. Always had a strong aptitude for accounting (got an A2 in LC) and have often thought an accounting qualification would bolster my CV, particularly if I was ever to leave the IT sector and go down the "poacher turned gamekeeper" route of Systems Accountancy.

I'd have no interest in working in practice and couldn't afford to spend a few years working in a junior position in order to qualify. Have been doing some work with insolvency practitioners lately and can see there's good money in the industry though juniors seem to be little more than data entry staff and, presumably, are paid accordingly?

Am I right in thinking CIMA would be the best path of certification to pursue? Or are there cheaper / faster / better qualification paths I should look into?

If anyone is currently working as a Systems Accountant, I'd be curious to hear what you feel the career prospects are like?
