    Hi
Just got a set of custom-fitted Ping irons.
Was hitting them OK during the fitting IIRC but I can't hit them at all now.
I'm going back to my instructor to sort it out but is this common.
A quick google suggests it might be.
Kinda worrying me- these clubs weren't cheap.
    Any advice.
    Thanks.

Yes, go back to who you got them from and explain what's happening. I'm sure they would be eager to sort out any problems.

Do you have a fairly consistent and repeatable swing? If so, I'd be a little worried as it's likely that the clubs are at fault.

If you are anything like me, where your swing changes from day to day (unfortunately!), then I wouldn't be too worried. Just hit the range and find your swing

Get a permanent marker, put a line on the back of the ball vertically, and hit. See where the mark is on the club, it is 99% most likely your swing , because even using a senior flex or ladies flex, for a person who hits stiff, should still be hitting the ball but with higher spin, or less accurate dispersion of shots, but not so much that he can't hit the ball in the general area he was aiming.

Most likely swing, video your swing too next time.

Any fitting service worth their salt, and more importantly their reputation will take you back with open arms and re-evaluate...for free.

For a fitting service rep is everything, having people saying how they spunked money and have clubs they cant hit, is a bad reflection on them. It says they can't fit correctly.

Go back to the fitter and get a re-check ( which most places should be offering, a return consultation after a few rounds)

op, define what you mean by can't hit them at all.
    what's happening?

    All sorts of things.
Seem to hit it right a fair bit, not sure if you'd call it shanking it but going right and low straight off.
Just mis-hits- hitting it thin a lot as well.
But sometimes hitting it fat, no sense of forgiveness.
Just wanted to forget it really.

Having said all that (possibly after standing closer to the ball with shaft more upright as they're longer clubs) i hit the odd shot very well (similar to at the fitting; ie better than ever tbh).

I should be going for another lesson tomorrow.
So i'll look at it properly tomorrow.

Sounds like ball coming off the hosel if its low and a direct 45 degree angle squirt. that's easily fixed if you know why, if you stand up, or push your hips towards the ball, you will shank it as the hosel has moved to where the sweet spot should be, are you humping your hands at impact?

The only shots you can judge the clubs on are the ones out of the centre to be honest, even then you can only judge them against a baseline of what your previous good shots of similar swing were like.

FWIW, the guy at the fitting said my swing was repeatable.
Instructor tells me there's not much wrong with it (always make me laugh tbh given that i'm a bit of a hacker far from happy with my game).

Hit a few with my instructor today.
Most shots hit pretty well especially the higher irons so happy enough at the moment.
Tightened up my swing a bit.
Not sure what I was doing before.
He says the clubs are fine.
So I dunno, maybe it's just getting used to them.

Took me about a year to get comfortable with mine. Couldn't hit them for a couple of rounds. The were either sweet as a nut, or the s word

Suggesting it was more a case of 'man-fitting' to the clubs rather and club-fitting to the man ?

maybe there was a basic swing flaw (OTT, reverse pivot, etc) that no amount of clubfitting is going to resolve (unfortunately!)

Exactly, so how could someone claim to club fit him ?

those faults could easily be new and the pro just identified and "fixed" them

there wasnt much a fitter could do (assuming they werent supposed to be giving a lesson)

All of the above. The clubs got rid of my big slinging slice. Lie was set at 2 degrees flat which took a lot of time to adjust.

Old dog and new tricks. Clubs on there own will not produce a perfect swing. On the other side of it, i'm hitting it straighter and longer with a better flight.

My experience it that it will take 5 or 6 rounds until the OP becomes comfortable.
Yes if you have no feeling with the clubs and can't control them, go back.

    OP don't worry too much.
The same often happens even after a lesson. The fact that you hit most ok in front of the pro suggests this.

Happened me this year. Scored 10 points in a comp and couldn't hit the ball, just like you describe above.

Work with the pro and plenty of practice. It will pay off and you will be awesome!
(I'm now 4 shots lower since the start of the year and not finished yet!)

Possible of course the OP developed a flaw after his fitting, which has been amplified by the more specifically tailored club. Which is worth trying to rule out.

While a fitter obviously isn't there to give lessons, they should be competent enough understanding the swing to identify your faults and make sure that the club provided is going to compensate for that, or at the lease not make the situation worse.

Custom fitting for an average player is frequently a waste of money.

Better spent on getting some lessons from a good teacher imho.

Went out for a few holes this evening.
I honestly think I've never struck the ball as well.
Haven't gone out in a while and from the off I was surprised how well I hit the ball.

Generally longer drives than I normally hit.
    Some nice fairway hybrid shots.
    And decent approach shots.
A lot of the greens in regulation.

Quite happy and for the first time very positive about my game.
