    Hello lads,
I was asked to help someone out here. Theres a Mondeo in the workshop that struggles to start and when it does a load of white smoke comes out of the exhaust and it runs rough. When its warmed up the white smoke goes away.

This car is 2013 with only 11000km on it(all under warranty). They have been onto the ford hotline and followed all lines of inquiry. No coolant leaks or fault codes.
    They have fitted as follows:
    4 x injectors
    Diesel high pressure pump
    EGR cooler
    PCM!

Nothing has changed, they are going to do a compression test tomorrow and check the valve timing but Im not really sure thats the problem. Im thinking around the lines of a dodgy diesel particle filter, the fifth injector thats used to fire diesel into it to regenerate or even a temperature or pressure sensor problem? Has anyone here seen anything like that? Im not sure what else they done but said I'd ask here for some info.

Its warranty anyway and its not my problem so fire away experienced folk:)

Im no mechanic, but if you have doubts about the DPF being sh1te or blocked, can you not disconnect it from the turbo and see if it starts as it should?

Yeah I gave them some advice about that diesel particle filter but will tell them to do that. They went from the most basic cars in the world to fairly complicated things in a few years!
Ill also add the tank had been cleaned out with a good diesel and filter change.

Me too I am not mechanic but i always start with Check the dip stick if the car had recent oil change and the oil level is way to high this could happen as explained. Plenty of baboon mechanics think the extra oil they put in will just burn off no sweat but sometimes the extra oil is way too much goes on top of the pistons and burns tons of smoke

Whitish grey smoke (water vapour?) indicates coolant in the wrong place to me. Look for "mayonnaise" on the oil filler cap.

Black smoke / soot would indicate s fuel / fuelling ignition problem.

Bluish to black smoke would indicate excess oil / oil being burnt.

Sorry I can't do better than that.

Any specific smell from the smoke / vapour?

Surely a 2013 brand new Ford. under warranty is in with a Ford Garage getting repaired .

Can't figure out why it would be anywhere else -.

If its in with a Ford Garage - then the dealer should be in discussions with Ford to sort the issues out.

Or have I missed something - very puzzled .

It just sounds like from the OP that the car is in a normal (non ford) garage and they can't figure out whats wrong with it.

If its in a non Ford Garage - id love to know whose going to pay for parts that may not have been needed if a proper diagnosis had been made from the word go.

Or is the issue that a Ford dealer can't get to the bottom of the issue :(.

Genuinely wish you the best of luck though

The car isn't in ford in Airside in swords is it? The reason I ask is I was behind a 2013 what I thought was a focus but possibly a Mondeo yesterday with smoke pouring out the back of it, heading towards airside. So much so whoever was driving put the hazards on and slowed down. It stuck in my head because the car was brand new.

Oil level spot on. The guy working on it has 37 years experience with ford and is pretty sharp.

Its white smoke which can either be a coolant issue or fueling issue. We know there is no coolant being lost and considering it has all the new fuel injectors, pump etc we can almost eliminate that. They also swapped sensors over from another Mondeo but to no avail!

Thanks for the pointers anyway lads.

My friends 2002 mondeo 2.0 TDDI does the same thing when you start it cold. Idles rough for about 3 minutes, then the white smoke clears and the idle smooths out. We can't figure out what it is either. Checked it for fuel line leaks but couldn't see anything. Is there a non-return valve on them?

Bit of a thread on it here - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=81727373

With the info provided I would be looking towards a compression issue. With the fuel system and control replaced there has to be compression issue. could be wrong often am but can't think of anything else at the moment

very first thing i would do is pull out the glow plugs and do a compression test we got a few in , , when they are cold they run and smoke like hell and seem to be down on a cylinder and when they warm up the smoke clears and all seems good ,, they dont throw up fault codes or put mil lights on as nothing is wrong there but when we pulled the head off the cylinder would be slightly lower on either number 3 or 4 cylinder ,.caouse of problem was slighty bent conrod , our guess was dpf system dumping too much fuel in cylinder as customer seemed legit when he said he hadnt went in to any big puddles
