I got 2 degus in early July, had researched them loads and thought I was doing everything according to the care guidlelines. However 1 of them has developed a mouth abcess, she hasn't lost weight but def not herself... More hunched over, fur is messy and her mouth looks very sore. I've kept her water bottle clean but don't know what to do, love her to bits. Anybody know a good vet in the Galway area that knows about degus or any advice welcomed!
    Thanks

Have you called vets and asked them if they know anything?

Bigger, city vets are likely to know more. As they would deal with smaller animals often enough.

My favourite vet, in Trinity, limerick city sadly, knew nothing about degu (before me coming to him haha)..went researching it and hasn't done me wrong.

So ring a few vets and have a chat.

Degu are a more common pet now then they were 5 years ago, so it shouldn't be hard finding a vet who knows about them.

I would suggest using a water bowl instead of bottle(would be a bit easier on her mouth) On that, you might want to try softing food atm as well.

post on what vet you find and how she is.

    I <3 degus :)

Ark Vets in Galway city are good - the best small animal people are out at their Rahoon/Knocknacarra branch. We used to take our pet rats there. James is one guy, but I have trouble recalling the others name - possibly Aidan?

There's also a female vet in Tuam that specialises in exotics - I don't know her name unfortunately, I just know that James at Ark used to call her for second opinions or any particularly weird problems.
