What do warranties actually cover?

Out of interest what typically do 6month warranties on second hand cars actually cover?.....is it true it's really only major problems like engine or gearbox failure and not things like shocks going that could be caused by wear and tear??
I'm sure most people getting a 6 month warranty would feel it covered pretty much any reasonable defect/problem within 6 months of purchase?

It covers what it says on the paper.
In short though they usually cover defects that would not be normal, while they don't cover tyres and similar things that are consumables.
Make sure to read your warranty though as they may vary.

So there is no 'Standard' warranty within the motor trade?

A warranty is in addition to your consumer rights. If you think something happened to a car that was on it when you bought it you have other options to use other than a warranty.

    No. They vary.

You have consumer rights, essentially that the car should be "fit for purpose". That's still open to interpretation.

6 month warranty is usually Gearbox and engine.

Manufacturer multiyear warranty is usually anything not related to standard wear and tear or accidental damage.

E.G. Consumables (Brake pads, discs , tyres)

Thanks, sounds like the warranty is of more use to the garage as a selling point than to the purchaser as protection;)

A warranty is like an insurance policy; you pay a certain amount to guard against specified risks. You need to read the policy document and consider it in the context of the overall deal.

The warranty is for the garage, the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services act is for the consumer. A warranty, or lack of, shouldn't decide a car sale as there are other protections for the purchaser, they just require a bit more leg work.
