Ringed gulls

Is it common to see gulls with rings? With the bus flying in to town these days I've had more time to watch them down at Heuston on the way to work, and this one stood out because of his ring. Saw it again the following morning too, same place. I was going bleary-eyed trying to see if any other ones had rings but this was the only one I could spot.
Is there any way of finding out where it was ringed?

Go to this website, find black-headed Gulls, enter the appropriate details re: colour of ring etc and look for the right section re: the number and format of the code and you'll eventually get an email address to send your sighting to! You should get an email back relatively soon about the history of that bird!

And most importantly - let us know what you find out!! :)

http://www.cr-birding.org/colourprojects is a good website for people to bookmark too actually, just in case you ever see any birds with colour rings - and thats much more likely in the winter too because we get waders/gulls/geese from all over the place wintering in Ireland

    It looks from this
note 2 : E1AA-E6ZZ are ringed as pulli or breeding birds in The Netherlands.
on the site you gave the link for, that it was ringed in the Netherlands. I'll email the photo to the given contact.
    Thanks again.

ETA - I'll post again when I hear back.

Ringed in Arnhem, the Netherlands in June 2012. No other reported sightings.

I saw one in Wexford recently that was ringed 5 or 6 years ago as a chick at Cotswold Water Park in Gloucestershire and has been seen 5 or 6 miles away from there a few times (probably breeding) and seen on the east coast of Ireland a few times too (probably wintering).

Just goes to show the value of colour-ringing over just metal ringing - you pretty much have to find the bird dead to see the metal ring code, whereas a good scope or just a bit of luck means you can see a code on a colour ring, and get much more resightings over the course of the birds life as a result.

Thats his blog - plenty of info about the work they've done, the resightings they've got etc. - an interesting read!
