Gearbox gone???

I think I might have a gearbox problem. I am driving an avensis 1.6 and yesterday i noticed that it was harder to change up when at about 2500 rpm like I usually do. The gear stick was very stiff. It was grand once i was over 3000 rpm.

Gears were stiff last month but cleaning the bottom of the gearstick sorted that.

Car had a new clutch about 9 months ago so its not that.

Hopefully someone can advice on what this could be and hopefully it wont need a new gearbox.

If it's the front or back 3 gears I'd be leaning towards gear linkage rather than the gearbox itself.

Gearbox had to be changed in wife's 02 1.6 Avensis a few months back. It spent about 12-18mths "running rough" (soft grinding noise) when in gear before it broke down in the end. Got one in a scappy for 300euro ish. Was another bit to fit it - can't remember exactly the cost. Running perfect again now. We had no problem putting car in gear during this time.

Great linkage isn't too bad a job. Certainly cheaper/easier/quicker than the gearbox itself.

Google gear linkage and your car and you will find a guide to diagnosing the gear linkage.
