Mixed message i know but .....as a driver AND a biker i'm totally aware of bikes and how quick they can appear out of nowhere....Apart from the obvious look twice at junctions etc etc..can i ask you drivers that panic when they see a bike in their mirrors to..relax, be aware but kinda ignore him/her and carry on driving normally..the worst thing you can do is try and get out of the way, you might drive in the ditch or hard shoulder..which is actually more dangerous for the biker as theres a chance you might throw up stones/rocks into his face...and not good for you if you hit a large rock....A lot of riders will have stories about this type of thing.....All riders will have a fair idea of their next move and dont need the extra burrden of trying to guess your next move too....and for god sake dont hit the brakes thinking this'll help him to get by you quicker..it wont, when you brake we dont know why youre braking, a rabbit, ball ,turning..etc..???..
I'm also aware that some drivers get intimidated by bikes and will try to "race"...usually a biker wont entertain this carry on...some might though...

We all enjoy our sunday spins both drivers and bikers, even though you might think we ride too fast....;)......

    Lets be careful out there..:)

A car is a lot less likely to slow down if the bike isn't tailgating. ;)

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. If only - I've been blocked by bikes dawdling in the overtaking lane too. People can be dopes, irrespective of their mode of transport.

You mean you've been tailgaiting a bike who wont get out of your way.....who's the dope..........;)

My op was more aimed at the drivers on the country roads, especially on sunny sundays ,i did mention that ;)....i dont want to turn this thread into another boring "us " V's "them" agruement..i know theres loads of drivers who hate bikes/bikers...;)

No, I don't. I mean bikes blocking the overtaking lane in exactly the same way that cars do.

Judging from posts on Motors (your own last post included), I think most of the 'hatred' comes from bikers rather than motorists. Anyway, my point is that motorists may be panicking because the bike is too close.

Exactly...thats my point...why panic, we may look like power rangers but that's all...:p..we might be too close, but chances are in 2 seconds we'll be gone past...
We dont all hate drivers..and even drivers hate drivers....:)

It's natural to feel stressed while being tailgated, and a stressed driver is a potentially dangerous driver. It's not like you guys suffer from poor power to weight ratios or anything - would you not just hang back a bit when planning an overtake? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,012 ✭✭✭serious3

we do hang back! over, under, around is what i was taught. trouble is we can close a gap very quickly which often makes it look like we are tailgating, also remember that our headlights are often on and are also a lot higher than cars making it look like we are closer than we are. i've a cracked headlight from someone pulling up the hard shoulder and showering me with grit.

If your OP is about giving advice to motorists that you're giving plenty of space to I can understand, but if you're tailgating car drivers and they're panicking as a result then you really need to change your own behaviour.

As a biker, I apologize for the lads on the motorways that shoot up the middle between cars averaging around 200kph with the stupid loud exhausts.

Its scared the **** out of me on more then one occasion, driving the bike and car.

NO...theyre panicking before we even get close...bikers are more aware of things, an can spot someone getting all white-knuckly when they see us coming in their mirrors...nothing to do with tailgating...its more to do with them slowing, or as i said..braking....

    More aware than who? Drivers?

Yep , our lives depend on it...........

Can i just say, i started this post with good intentions, just to ask drivers to be aware of bikes and dont try to guess what theyre going to do next....there are some people who just want an arguement, sadly its the way on forums....

If it causes one driver (of the 600 views) to remember what they read here it might save an accident.....job done..imo

    :)

Not really. To me at least, your posts reek of arrogance and superiority. You're basically saying 'Don't worry when we tailgate you because we're so much more competent than you are'. If you want to save an accident then don't tailgate cars.

Sure they do. Just so we're clear, I have nothing against bikers and appreciate that they're a vulnerable class of road user. All I expect is that they show me the same degree of consideration that I show them.

Its my understanding the roadside speed cameras find it difficult to actually get a reading. And the vans don't have front facing cameras.

I've definitely seen bikes pulled, I saw a Garda on a bike with a hairdryer catch one just North of the East Link last week.

It's got everything to do with tailgating, you've already pretty much admitted that you tailgate. As a former biker I've never had a car driver panic when I've been behind them, that said I've always given them plenty of space.

All that your posts do is to further annoy car drivers and make life more difficult for the non-Sunday bikers out there.

It's called quoting. You inferred somebody is a dope for tailgating but accept that bikers do just that.

Good advice but do people really panic when there is a motorbike behind them?

maybe, I dont know. It just seems irrational to me.

Any driver's concentration will suffer when there's a vehicle too close behind them. It's one more hazard to deal with, taking attention away from all the other potential hazards.

It is no less arrogant than your original post is sweeping.

Tbh, a muppet in a 12-D reg A6 held me up all the way home this eve on the R347. And I was on an '87 Vespa 125. He passed a camera van and THEN threw out the anchors completely for another mile before I turned off. I mean he's already past the bloody thing - pointless going below the limit then. You might call my riding tailgating - although not that close - I call it (A6 driver )driving without due care and attention (for other road users. .)

I honestly can't see what this has to do with what I said?
