Insurance and No Claims Bonus

I have a policy running aug-aug. Last oct I had a claim made against me. If I renew my policy, would I be able to change in oct, which would be a year after the claim or does my no claims bonus only come into affect the following august?

You'll have no problem leaving your current insurer, but you won't have any NCB and, with an accident on record, you may find it hard to get cover elsewhere.

That's what I'm wondering? As it stands I've no NCB. Does it come into affect in oct (a year after the claim) or next august (a full year of the policy with no claim)?

It's a claim free year, so you won't get a year until next August when you have had one years claim free on the policy.

When your policy expires in August you receive your certificate of no claims, if you've had no claims. You had a claim and so therefore the cert issued by your insurance company will state that you are entitled to NO NCB. If you move insurance companies they will ask for the certificate from your previous company. You could choose to not tell the new insurance company but it would be a lie and your policy will be null and void.

I was just hoping that because my claim was so early in the policy that I could try get cheaper in october...just going to have to suck it up

Some insurance companies won't even quote if you've a claim and no NCB. I was getting quotes of 2k from those who did. Ended up going with xsdirect with a 1k excess for 700.

The first year after my claim i had to pay 1.3k for insurance from the same company but my third year is back down to 600 quid which aint too bad and im still with the same insurers.

I got a renewal notice for 1100 on mine which they had paid out to me on as wrote off. I of course had to get a different car.

Car I got was a lower insurance bracket and they wouldn't quote me. They must have some obligation not to charge you crazy money on renewal of the same car. Told me i'd have to get refusal letters from 3 companies to get a quote.
