Aer Arann (Aer Lingus regional) carry on

Am heading to the UK for a wedding at the weekend and flying Aer Lingus regional out of necessity. Haven't paid for a checked in bag, yet. The carry on size limit is smaller than Ryanair. I have a cabin Max backpack that should fit as it won't be full but a colleague has said that some of the bins barely fit a laptop.

Should I just bite the bullet and pay for a bag?

This talk of strikes isn't helping either but word is striking Tuesday & Wednesday, I'm flying Saturday & Monday.

The bins under the wings are smaller but the vast majority of the bins can take the documented Aer Arann max. bag size. Get to the gate early so you're not boarding last and shove your bag into one of the bins near the front of the plane i.e. before you get to your seat, then you're guaranteed you won't have to put it in a bin behind your seat which can be a disaster when you arrive.

If you're flying at the weekend then there will be less laptop bags onboard so potentially less pressure on space in the overhead bins.
