    Hello everyone,

I'm looking for your help if possible. I'm a Primary Teacher. I'm wondering if you're allowed to sub in your own school during your career break? I'm heading away in November and know I'm allowed to sub for 40 days. I called the INTO and they told me you couldn't! However my Principal has never heard of this, nor have three other Principals I have spoken to? I was wondering if any of you have done it? According to the into this has been the case for a few years and not a new rule. Hmmmm....???

    Thank you xx

I think the INTO have not explained it clearly.

Nowhere in the circular does it state you can't sub in your own school.

As you pointed out you are allowed sub. in any primary school for a max. of 40 days.

However, when hiring a sub. the principal must give priority to qualified teachers for subbing work...............implying that newly qualified, unemployed teachers are to be hired before retired teachers or teachers on breaks.........................this rule has been in for a few years & is probably what the INTO are referring to.

If you're heading away shortly & subbing becomes available in your school between now & then the principal would have to demonstrate that no qualified subs. were available so he / she then hired you.............could be difficult in present economic climate with so many qualified teachers looking for work & willing to travel anywhere. In exceptional circumstances.........i.e. - no qualified subs. available.............then you could be hired.

    DES Circular 10 / 2011 states:

7 Teaching whilst on Career Break

7.1 A teacher on a career break is precluded from taking up an appointment in any capacity in any school within the State.

Schools must give priority to qualified teachers when making appointments for periods of substitution.

In exceptional circumstances a teacher on a career break may be employed on the following basis:

    • in Post Primary – for a maximum of 150 hours in a school year

    • in Primary - for a maximum of 40 days in a school year
