My brothers wife has an engine failure issue with a discovery 4 (2010) with about 80,000km. No tow bar!, no off roading, was purchased because they needed a 7 seater etc....
Anyhow, it gave no signs of any problem and is out of warranty since May of this year. LR quote aboyrt €10k for replacement engine.
    Any advice.
I got plenty of sound advice from contributors for my problems with my 2001 TD5

What was the nature of the failure?

Sorry, I thought I had submitted a reply. I dont know the nature of the failure yet. LR have dropped the oil out of it and determined that the correct oil was used and there was sufficient oil in the engine. They havent however tried to manually turn the engine. So I dont know if the CS is broken or whether the block is intact or what the turb(s) are like.
I havent seen much on the web about this engine giving issues. There was some reporting from South Africa with the Disco 3 but nothing with the newer one. Has anyone heard of any issues with this engine? Having owned a LR my experience with LR dealers is not a good one. Over reliance on computers with no real understanding or problem solving ability would characterise my experience. I am wondering what is the best route to go now assuming LR dont surprise me and agree to cover the cost of a new engine. There's not many of these scrapped yet.

May be worth asking on the Disco4 forum but keep us informed. http://www.disco4.com/forum/

They are supposed to be very reliable, only thing I've heard stops them is the fuel pump drive belt which on D3s is at the back of the engine and gets missed as it's supposed to be a body off job to change. It can be done by feel and mirrors without that though.

Just to bring you up to date...... LR and the dealer concerned surprised me in that they covered the vast majority of the costs associated with refitting new block etc... We still dont know what happened and LR seem coy about this.
    Thanks to contributors

That's good news and a distinct improvement in LR customer care. Would be interesting to know what went wrong, same engine is an option in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Jaguar.
