Change to shift pattern - shift allowance entitlements?

    I'm expanding on numbers in the dept I run and will be introducing Mon-Fri shiftwork where previously work hours for the staff were single shift 8-5. The new situation will see a daytime shift and an evening shift, both of 8 hours duration.

    My own position is that a shift pattern should attract a shift premium. This was the case when I last ran a shift crew under similar conditions (where the shift premium was, iirc about 18% of basic salary).

    I'm not sure of the tack my foreign-based mutlinational HR dept will take and I want to be informed beforehand so as to steer things in the desired direction

    The contract of employment applicable states "normal working hours are 40 hours per week from 8.00 amto 4.30 pm daily, Monday to Friday and has a clause stating that the company reserves the right "to change your working hours"


    Could this reserved right be construed as permitting a company to oblige a worker to work shifts, whether or not an individual wanted to go on shift or not? And if so, are shift premiums obligatory for shift work or might the company consider a shift pattern to be just a change in working hours not attracting of any recompense?
