Sky Sports TV app and monthly ticket

Hi folks...... need to settle a debate once and for all.

If one is NOT a Sky TV customer what options are there out there to get Sky Sports on a phone/tablet?

I've heard of Skygo monthly ticket but prices are mad.

I've also seen talk of an app for iPhone/iPod/iPad and Android, but rumour is you have to be a paid up Sky TV customer to use these and it's an extra €5.99 a month?, why would you bother with this when Skygo is free to Sky TV customers, it just doesn't make sense?

Anyone know for sure what the deal is and how much it costs?

There's Sky go which is free to subscribers and then there is Sky go+ which is an additional €6 per month for additional features.

But what if you are not a subscriber that's the point?, is there a way of getting it via an app other than the Skygo monthly ticket?

Slightly off topic but what seems to have happened in the last Sky update is that they are strictly limiting SkyGo to 2 additional devices per customer. Previously there was a workaround this where you could add multiple devices but this loophole is now closed. So you get 2 devices with your account, if you want any more you subscribe to Sky Go Extra for €6 per month which allows you to add another two devices.

From my limited knowledge there is no cheap way of getting SkyGo for a non Sky customer.

I dont understand the point you are trying to make or the question you're asking.

Why would you expect to get something from Sky if you are not a subscriber?

Not that I'm aware of. Sky will never provide a cheap alternative for their tv service.

The point he is trying to make is that he wants to subscribe to sky on a tablet. Its a fairly understandable question.
Not everyone can have a dish put up. So with IPTV becoming the future of broadcasting, im sure it will be something that will be introduced in the future

Simplest and cheapest way is to subscribe for €6.99 per month for "skysportsmobile tv" app.

You get all the sky sports channels and it works well on ipad. You can cancel it anytime via your itunes account.

    I think thats 6.99€ a day?

I'll take that back, seems its 5.49€ a month on iphone and ipod. for 7 skysports channels. Thats a great option.

It's strange, I can't see this app either in the store, have a nexus 4.

Some apps aren't available across all devices. That app is coming up as compatible with my phone (Samsung Galaxy S2), but not with my Nexus 7 tablet. Which is a pity, as I might have been tempted if it was tbh!

I remember looking a while back & it was available for the Nexus 4 plus when I check the link given in my browser it still is listed as a supported device.

is payment then through the I tunes account ?

Yes it is. You can cancel monthly payment anytime it's very cheap way of viewing all of sky sports and all above board, picture on iPad is pretty good too although it was designed just for iPhone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,017 ✭✭✭Leslie91

Now we're talking... that's what I was looking for, the app to allow one watch the Sky Sports channels on a phone or tablet without being a Sky TV subscriber!!!!.

I've a Nexus 4 too and it seems it is not supported by the Android version of the app.

Thanks IrishHomer I'll be checking for it on iTunes tonite for the iPad. This is great, €6.99 a mth is a no brainer compared to €34 a mth via UPC (or whatever it is).

Why am I paying €35 a month if its available here?

and just to confirm, do you need an existing sky/ sky sports subscription to piggyback off?

Its strange that its 5.50 month BUT a one day pass is 9.99stg !

I've it on my Mobile for 6.99 a month and have never been a Sky customer so you do not need an existing account. Very handy APP but I find that the coverage is delayed by a minute or two (Even compared to Wiziwig).

Anyway of getting the picture onto the tele then? I believe sky go is locked down such that the signal won't transmit via hdmi out, presume this is the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

That is an incredible price. I take back my words from earlier in the thread

    This is a great thread.

Thought I was snookered as I'm not a normal sky sports subscriber, but it appears I have options. Great stuff.

Afaik this is not possible/permitted as yet else their offerings via Sky and UPC would be essentially redundant. Being able to get it on a tablet like iPad or equivalent Android is unreal even if it's a couple of mins behind actual live.

1 last question just to confirm... you have the above working on iPad and you are NOT a Sky tv customer correct?

Reason I ask is the wording on here http://www1.skysports.com/mobile/apps/7378885 talks about one needing a Sky ID, and then it says

"If you are NOT a Sky TV customer you can purchase an auto-renewing monthly subscription to Sky Sports News for iPad for £4.99 (see the App store for details)."

    i.e. SSNews only?

It reads to me that to use the app for SSTV on iPad you need to be a Sky TV customer but for everybody the app is available on iPhone and iPod only?

Are you a Sky TV customer?, if you are then afaik you can use the app on iPad and iPhone/iPod for €5.99 per mth and €5.49 respectively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,550 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Guys do any of you really think or believe that Sky will allow you to view their sports channels for €5.49 per month when people like myself have to pay €62 per month to watch on a telly?

And before anyone says its only €35 to get Sports on TV dont forget that before you can add sports you must take out the basic entertainment pack which costs €27

Oh right, I was searching the Apple App Store as I wanna try get Sky Sports onto an iPad. Pity Apple don't have the same app for sale

From what I can see the app you are talking about is the 'Sky Sports TV'

This app is only available on iphone and ipod touch according to the link above. NOT IPAD. From my experience, watching sport on my iphone its not great. The screen is too small to watch comfortably.

Can anyone confirm can you use this app on the iPad without a sky subscription? If you can I would drop my sky sports sub, I've watched plenty of sport on my ipad and for €5.49 per monthit would be great value compared to €34 a month

Thats not the one for €5.99

Its an app called "sky sports mobile", i believe sky were to fase it out instead of the newer more expensive apps but its still available and still works very well on iphone, ipod or ipad as i have it on all devices for that price for several months and i am not a sky customer.
If you go for the ipad specific app you will pay more and there is no need ofr that as the iphone version is cheaper and works just as well.

Here is link to the €5.99 version: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/sky-sports-tv/id453417026?mt=8

    True.

I may be wrong, but the only other way I can see that's a bit cheaper and watch on a large enough display, is to get the content online via a PC/laptop (which you can hook up to TV) with a Sky Go Monthly ticket. Prices:

How could they stop the sky go outputting via hdmi??
I always use my parents sky go account and just hook up the laptop to the telly with the hdmi cable.

I sometimes extend my desktop to the telly so i can have one match on the laptop screen and one on the telly.

When I follow that link it brings me to an app called Sky Sports Tv. Once downloaded the sports channels are all there but when I try for access it offers to either download Sky Go or continue using the current app, when that is selected it then asks me for my Sky ID which I guess means I need to already be a Sky customer.

I would hang on to your 6 euro a month sub for as long as possible because to me it doesn't seem possible through tithe app anymore. Pity :(
