I suppose I'm not surprised that there's a bias towards American sports, it being an American magazine.
It's more that there are quite a few photos in there that do nothing at all for me. I've certainly seen other sports photos that struck me more. But I guess that's the way things go!

The shot of the basketball game on the aircraft carrier is pretty cool though... :D

no.3 is a meh photo; i don't see how it'd make the list at all let alone get up to that spot. maybe it's got some context that i would be unaware of.

no.19 is beautiful, but most of the photos seem to be picked because of the occasion, not because of the quality of the shot.

Some great photos but some truly ordinary ones too. What's the story with the ice hockey player on his own on the ice (shot 27), looks like it was taken with a camera phone? Maybe there's some amazing back-story about this photo but that just makes it a great sporting moment not a great sports photo IMO.

That's a great sporting moment, not a great sports photo! And as for the fish...

You should send that link to the w4nkers on the editorial desk in Sports Illustrated to show them what real sports photography is.

Loads of great photos of sporting moments in that SI list, loads of great shots on that other link too.
